You should all know by now that I cannot love a book if I do not like the writing. And I didn't like the writing in this book. It isn't bad, it is actually a little good. I just couldn't get into it. It didn't make me feel anything for anything in this book. Well, except for some heartbreak and that was not a positive thing. I also cannot stand any sort of love triangle. And there sort of is one. Sort of.
The book starts out sort of good. I'm a bit confused. Because I thought this book would be all mermaids, but it isn't. It is mostly about High School. And I hated that. Have gotten enough of those stories :p Especially since I was expecting amazing mermaids and such from this book. But there are mermaids. And other awesome creatures. They just weren't done well. I didn't enjoy them like I wanted.
We get to see a lot of mermaids in this book, well, at least a few. And I didn't like any of them. They just seemed so.. less. Some seemed kind, and it didn't make sense to me. Expected this book to be pretty dark. Really need to stop expecting things. There are dark parts in this book, but there aren't much. And they weren't really good, either.
But I did enjoy the plot. I would have. If the characters had been even a tiny bit likable. But they weren't. At all. I didn't like a single character in this book. And I hated that :( First there is Tristan. The main character. I felt for him at times, but I hated him. He is supposed to be in love with his best friend, but he is still fucking tons of other girls all the time. Don't get it.
And he acted too much like a boy. Although I don't think boys are like that. Not really. Which is why I couldn't like him. I just didn't feel anything for him at all. Then there were his parents. Didn't feel a single thing for them either. Especially not his mother. She just seemed so.. cruel, in a way. Then there were Tristan's best friend; Layla. And I could have liked her. Could have.
But she's acting like a bitch in all the book. At least, in my eyes. She might have been right to do so, but that is only why I hated it so much. It seems like she loves Tristan, but she never says a single thing. She is mean to him most of the time. Then she starts flirting with his new friend; Kurt, right in front of him. And I hated her for it. I really did.
Kurt could have been an awesome character if he hadn't been liking the girl Tristan loves. Which he should totally know, btw. It was very obvious. But I did like his sister. Sort of. For the most part :) There were a few other characters in this book as well. But, didn't really like any of them. Didn't feel anything, like I said. And I'm really sad about that.
Anyway. This book could have been amazing. But there were too much high school and drama for it to be any good to me. I didn't like it. Would have, if it weren't for the things I mentioned. Also disappointed in how fast it ended. The book is long, but nothing ever really happens. Everything that happens could have been just 100 pages, in my opinion. Wished to know more of the plot.
But still. I will be reading the sequel. But I will be peeking at so many things in it before I know if I wish to read it :p Anyway! If you do not mind the things I did mind, then I think you will like this book :)
I am reading this book at the moment! I'm enjoying it so far, but the start was a bit of a muddle for me. Or maybe I just wasn't paying attention. :P It's a shame this didn't live up to your expectations Carina but thanks for the helpful review! I'll be sure not to set the bar too high and hopefully it won't be as bad a read for me.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with reading it ;) Maybe you'll like it :)
Deletetnx 4 the helpfull review carina
ReplyDeletebummr it was iffy at parts
thank you for commenting :D
DeleteJudging by your review, you were way, way, way more genourous with this book than I would have been. I probably wouldn't given it a 1 star. Anyways, this book looks pretty interesting, but I don't think I'll be picking it up now. I don't really like high school drama at all [I already have enough of that going on in my life], and I'm pretty sure I won't like the drama especially because this is supposed to be a mermaid book. I'm sorry you didn't like this. :/ Great, honest review though!

Hih, yeah, probably (A) It just feels so.. mean, to give a two star review. But then. I really should start doing that. I just didn't like this book. But I did finish it. But still, it wasn't good for me at all :\ Yeah, high school drama sucks. At least, I really hate reading about it :) Thank you so so so much for commenting. <3 :)
Deletei've never read anything about mermaids/merman(?). and this sounds interesting (reading from male's POV? isn't that exciting?!):D
ReplyDeleteand um, does Tristan talk/think a lot about his um..manhood? i'm worried about the sexual references in the book.
