Review: Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore

It took me longer to re-read this third book in the trilogy. Simply because it hurts me more. It was my fifth read. I still love this so very much. It is my least favorite of the three, yet I love it beyond words. The pain is just too much at times. And yet. All of the pain and hurt is what I love most about this book too. So fully perfect.

Bitterblue is a completely stunning book. The writing is amazing. The world so good. And the characters kill me at all times. What I love most is that this one is very much a direct sequel to both Graceling and Fire. And we see more of pretty much all of them, though Bitterblue is the main person, and it is her point of view.

This book is all kinds of long. And there is so much happening at all times. Okay, it may have been a little slow, but I did not mind at all. Bitterblue very much needed a little rest. So much happen from beginning to end, though. This is a book of hurt. A book of truth and lies. Of Bitterblue trying to be the best queen, without knowing those who are supposed to be helping her are actually hurting her most. We first got to know Bitterblue at ten years old in Graceling. When her father, Leck, died. This time she is eighteen. Trying her best to rule. Not knowing anything beyond her castle. So she starts sneaking out. And she learns so much. About how her city is suffering, and new things about herself. I loved how Bitterblue grew wiser and more caring through this.

Bitterblue was all kinds of amazing and I adored her so. So much goes wrong for her in this book. And I loved every moment. Oops. There is so much hurt, though, and that just hurt me. So good, but so painful. Learning more about what Leck did during his thirty-five year reign. All the people hurt and killed. All the books destroyed, traditions left forgotten. He ruined the city of Monsea. And Bitterblue is left to pick up the pieces. Which was not at all an easy thing to do. But oh, how much I loved reading about it all. Sigh.

What I loved most was all the friends she has. Po and Katsa. Giddon and Raffin and Bann. Helda and Madlen. They were all precious and Bitterblue loved and needed them so. I will not say that much about this book. Only that I loved re-reading it. It has been almost four years since my last read. Had forgotten small details, but remembered everything important. That did not stop this book from hurting me all over again. There is so much going on. I cannot describe it. My heart is full and broken because of this story.

There are so many new characters in this book. So many that I loved so much. There was Saf, his best friend Teddy and their sisters. All adorable. There was Hava, whom I loved very much. There was Fox, whom I was always curious yet suspicious about. We got to know those around Bitterblue, those who had more control over her kingdom. Like Thiel. And I can't even talk about him. It hurts way too much. I liked him, I hated him. He was so full of pain. The people around him too. This whole book was full of pain. Oh.

I will be honest and say that I think the reason for why I like Graceling and Fire more than Bitterblue is because of the romance. Po and Katsa and Brigan and Fire were perfection. And in this one there was Saf. I did love him, a whole lot. But he was not perfect. He had no problem with hurting Bitterblue; hurt her soul. And that bothered me. That pain hurt me the most. He got better, but I never really forgave that. Okay, he kind of had a reason for doing so. As she did hurt him first. But the reason for that was a must.

I just saw on my goodreads that none of the friends I have on there have read this book. And I so cannot understand that at all. It is a must read if you have read Graceling and Fire. It is the book that binds them all together. It even has all the same characters, just a little older. And we learn so much about Leck and his reign. Things I never wanted to know, yet needed to know at the same time. Bitterblue was a perfect book. I am so glad that I have re-read this trilogy. They mean so much to me. Can't wait for Winterkeep.

Review: Fire by Kristin Cashore

Reading this book for the fifth time was the most amazing thing. I even think I might love it a little more than Graceling. If possible. This series is the most amazing and I love it more than anything. These books are fully perfection. With Fire even more so. It truly broke my heart all over again. In good and bad ways. Love it so.

There is so much I could say about this precious book. But will manage to say just a little this time. The writing is stunning. The characters are incredible. And this world created was even more exciting and amazing than the Graceling world. Okay, set in the same world, just different parts of it. And I loved that very much.

Fire got to me even more this time, I think. It hurt my heart even more. It made me love these characters even more. And I am so in love with the world that Kristin has created. I cannot wait to re-read Bitterblue next and then finally get to read Winterkeep. And I could not be more excited. But I do wish there could be more of Fire and Brigan together. They are amazing and there is still so much I would love to know. But with this book taking place many years before the other books, that isn't possible. Sigh. I am very happy with this book, though. It ends perfectly too. Heartbreaking at times, of course, but so very good. I felt so much for Fire while re-reading this lovely book. Her hurt broke me. She had happy moments too, that I loved most. I loved how she went from having only one friend, to many. I loved how Fire changed.

Fire takes place in the Graceling world. Only in a different part of it, called the Dells. And I must say that I loved this part of the world the most. Because of the bright colors and the beauty. Because of the monster animals that lived there. It was so interesting and so exciting to read about. I completely loved this world. And learning more about it was always fun. This is also a book that shows us Leck as a child. Which was all kinds of horrifying, as it shows how he was always bad. And he did such horrible things. Worst villain.

Now to talk a little about Fire. The most amazing girl I have read about. She is the last human monster in this world. She is beyond beautiful. With the most stunning red hair, which she must hide almost all the time. She has the power of mind control. People go crazy when they see her. Monsters want to eat her. Men want to hurt her or have her, which is the same thing, really. Her father was a monster too, as has been dead for two years now. Fire has such conflicted feelings about her father, and for good reasons.

Because her father was a true monster. He hurt people with his mind control, he had some sort of control over the king too. And him dying was the best thing for this kingdom. But Fire is still hurting because of it, as he was still her father. And he loved her, like he loved nothing else. Fire was a gentle person. She did not hurt people. She did not use her power for bad things. I loved her relationship with Archer. They had been friends since they were babies. Then lovers, but nothing more than that, despite his wishes. Hmph.

The kingdom was at war. And that war came to the door of Fire. She had to travel to the king's city, weeks away. And it was such a great journey. I loved reading about her quiet life, and loved reading about her getting to see the king's place the most. I have never really liked Archer. He was controlling and jealous. Which is why Fire ended things with him, though he was still her best friend. But this time I did like him more. He still made so many mistakes. So many of them. But oh, how I treasured their friendship. Sobs.

And then there was Brigan. The brother of the young king, Nash. Brigan hated Fire at first. And Nash wanted to marry her, as he could not control himself around her. I did not like him for a long time. But he grew on me. And Brigan. Sigh. He was the most precious man. Their relationship started off badly. But slowly grew into more. And reading about Brigan and Fire together was the most amazing thing. I loved them beyond words. I loved getting to know him. I so loved how they cared for each other. Fully magical.

I have now written too much about this book. Yet never enough. And so I will share a little more, but not much. I simply cannot get over how amazing this book is. And how badly I love it, every part of it. There is a war. The book takes place over almost a year, as things moved slowly. But I loved it. I loved getting to know the twins and Hanna. And Fire's guards. I loved Fire and her love for music. I loved Brigan and his love for horses. I loved how horrible this book could be too. Mostly I just loved how very beautiful it was.

Fire was everything that I wanted it to be. Okay, this is my fifth time reading it, but still. It was just what I needed right now, after having had such a long time with a bad reading slump. Reading Graceling before it was the best, of course. But I love these two books just as much. And they mean the world to me. And Bitterblue too. I really hope that Winterkeep will be just as perfect as I think it will be. If you still have not read Fire then you really must do so. This is still very much a series, though, so do start with Graceling.

Review: Graceling by Kristin Cashore

For so many years now Graceling have been my most favorite book of all time. That is still the case. I can't believe I again let it go over three years before I re-read it. Almost four now. This was my sixth time reading this book. And I am so happy that I finally read it again. Because it is still my favorite. It is still fully perfect.

And that makes me the happiest. I will not be writing such a long review of this precious book. As I am sure I have already said it all before, many times. I just cannot stop loving this story. And I cannot wait to re-read the next two books as well, before at last getting to read Winterkeep, a brand new story. Beyond excited.

There is so much I could write down about this book. But that would take me forever, and it would mostly just be me fangirling over every part of this book that I love. I can't believe it has been nine years since I first read this perfect book. And I'm so thrilled that I still love it just as much as I did then. The writing is still so amazing. The characters still take my breath away. I love them all so much. And the story is still all kinds of epic and dangerous and so very good. The romance still kills me the most. Katsa and Po are the perfect couple and I just love them to pieces. Reading about their growing romance was the best to me. Reading about Katsa fighting things was all kinds of incredible too. So loved the scene with the mountain cat. I loved their sea journey.

I will not go over the plot of everything this time. Will only share a little of my favorite things. Starting with Katsa and Po. Them meeting and getting to know each other was the best thing. Seeing them becoming friends, training their fighting together, it was fully good. And then becoming something more. I shipped them the most. And their romance was perfection. It starts early in the book, and I was thankful for that. Reading about the two of them together was my most favorite part of the book. I just love them so much.

But getting to know them was also incredible. Katsa has the Grace of killing. At least, that is what she thinks. I loved her getting to know herself better, trusting herself more. It was so good to read about. I loved her friends too. I loved learning about Po, and the secret of his true Grace. Which was incredible. Simply loved these two characters the most. Then they meet the young Bitterblue. She was so fierce and small, and I loved her so. Their friendship was the best thing too. So much bad happens. My poor heart.

The sad parts of this book still killed me. When they had to leave Po behind. It broke me. And it was so good. And learning about King Leck, and his powers over his kingdom. It still kills me how awful that was. And how much worse it will become in Bitterblue. Such a well written story and villain. This whole book was perfection to me. And I will never stop loving it. Shall not write much more about it. Just that I very much love this world created. I love these characters so much. Hope Katsa and Po will be in Winterkeep.

Okay, a small confession. I once again took so long to re-read this amazing series because I still have hurt feelings over a small thing that happened years ago. There is so reason why I should be hurt by it at all. But I am. And it is so slow to go away, probably because I'm a Taurus, and we hold our grudges until we die. Yeah. But I am slowly making myself get over this small hurt. I am not letting it make me dislike my most favorite book. It's just making me re-read them less than I should. How rude. I must get better.

But finally made myself start reading them again. And I am so happy that I did so. Graceling is still my favorite book of all time. It is still the one that makes my heart race. Okay, I might love Fire just as much, but will know that for sure once I read it again in a moment. If I might love it more than Graceling. But I do not think so. They are both perfection, though. And I'm just so glad that this series exists. If you still have not read this most incredible book then you are for real missing out on the best adventure. Go read this.

SPARROW RISING BY JESSICA KHOURY

Goodreads Description:

Jessica Khoury brings her masterful world-building and emotional depth to a brand-new fantasy series. In a world where everyone is born with wings, stone monsters prowl the skies, hunting those who dare to fly too high.

In the Clandoms, everyone is born with wings, with tight-knit communities formed around bird types: Jay, Falcon, Crow.

Ellie Meadows dreams of growing up to join the Goldwings -- the famed knights who defend all the people of the Clandoms. It was a Goldwing, after all, who saved her life on that terrible day her parents were killed. There's just one problem: Ellie is a Sparrow, and the Goldwings are almost invariably picked from the higher clans like Eagles and Ospreys. This rigid hierarchy means that Ellie is destined to become a farmer.

Determined to honor her parents' memories and prove herself worthy of the Goldwings, Ellie sets out on her own for the capital. But her journey will be dangerous. Foul creatures called gargols lurk behind every cloud, ready to slay anyone unlucky enough to be caught outside in a storm -- just as Ellie's family was.

Soon her path intertwines with a colorful band of fellow outcasts, each with their own aspirations... and their own secrets. Ellie's new friends offer not just roadside companionship. They'll challenge her ideas of right, wrong, and what truly makes a hero.

In My Mailbox #480

Hi. Another week gone by, so very fast. I'm still just trying to take it easy. Playing Animal Crossing each day, and pokemon go, still, and it is the best. Spends time with my family all the time too, which is the best. This week I finally managed to read a book. Eee. Okay, super short, but still counts. I'm in a bit of pain at the moment, but doing well despite this. This week I'm waiting on Winterkeep. <3 I shared my review of Serpentine :) Okay, such a short book to read, but still good. And I'm starting my re-read of Graceling next, eee. I cannot wait. So very excited. Got zero books in the mail this week, but waiting on many, so hopefully next week. Hmm. Taking forever to arrive at the moment. But yeah. I'm doing okay, mostly. Pain, always, but good too. Though my psoriasis is bad. Ugh. Hope you are all well and safe. <3

Taylor Swift: evermore. Eee. Finally got my two copies. <3 Got the clean edition too, just to own it, ha.
Totoro. I saw this in a local store here. And I had to get it. A most adorable drinking flask :D I love it so.
Ring Fit Adventure. Okay, this might not be for me, but I really really wanted to try it, so I had to buy it. Oops. It looks like fun :D I just know that I am veeery weak. But still going to try my best, ha. Hoping it'll make my arms stronger. Hoping I don't have to jump, as my place is not built for jumping. Ha :) Excited.

Review: Serpentine by Philip Pullman

There was no way that I would not be reading this newest Lyra short story by Philip. And I finally had the chance to do so. As with his other ones, this was so very short. Which was a little sad, as I would have loved to stay in Lyra's mind a little longer. But it was still such a great short story. I did love it very much.

Giving it five stars. Too short, though. But perfect even so. And the illustrations by Tom Duxbury were incredibly gorgeous. So many of them too, mostly of Lyra and Pan. Pretty. Since it was so short, I'm only sharing a little bit about it. I am such a huge fan of the His Dark Materials trilogy. It's simply the best series.

I loved La Belle Sauvage too. Still not happy about The Secret Commonwealth, though. But I still have hope that book three will be better, that it will make the second one better. Oh, how I hope. It can go a very wrong way too, which I very much hope not. Because of my love of these books, of course I needed to read this very short story too. There is little happening. It takes place one year after Lyra's Oxford, so when she is a teenager. She and Pan have travelled north again. I liked reading about how the north had changed, after the war. It is not the same. We get to see more of Lyra and Pan together, and they are the cutest. Already starting to grow apart, which I still do not approve of. I'm still angry. It better be ten times better in book three. Hmph.

Nothing much happened in Serpentine. It was a gorgeous little book. With stunning artwork. The writing was amazing too, which is always the case with books by Philip Pullman. I just wish it had been longer. But even so, I loved this little peek at teenage Lyra and Pan. Loved learning a little more about the north again too. If you are a fan of this trilogy, like I am, then I very much think you should read this adorable small book too. I just wish there will be news about the third Book of Dust soon. My heart is so worried.

Been busy this week with my new laptop, which I love. And as always, Animal Crossing. Which is still the best. Sigh. But yeah. I really hope to read something this coming week. It's breaking my heart. Cannot buy books from anywhere else. Cannot buy books that I do not pre-order first, for a lower price. Uuugh. Please fix this issue. Sigh. So sharing my latest instagram photo, though it is daaays old now. And sharing two gorgeous eARCs I have downloaded from Edelweiss lately, as I was autoapproved. So excited for them both. Just, yeah. In My Mailbox #478

Another week gone by. Gosh. So fast. And all my Christmas things have been put away. Sobs. Haha :D Is it November again soon? Sigh. Christmas time is the best :) But very much looking forward to it finally getting light again outside soon. Some weeks left to go. And cannot wait for summer. So far away. Hoping we might actually get some heat this year, ha. I have been so busy this week. Taking my sauna each day, which is the best. But gosh, I am exhausted. No reading done either. Not yet. Soon, I hope. I got nothing in the mail this week. So no new photo either. Just my regular instagram photo and an update, as always :) Was too few days with mail. And I'm not really waiting on much either. Hopefully something new next week. I also might have bought myself a new laptop today. What. Even. I could not really afford it. But it was on sale, the one I wanted. And the one I have has had issues since I got it three years ago. Ugh. So bought a new one. Aaack. It looks awesome, though. I'm hoping it will have zero issues :) This week I'm waiting on Realm Breaker :) And I shared my Best Books of 2020 post too. <3 I hope you are all doing well and staying safe.
