In My Mailbox #612

Another Saturday. This week have been pretty crazy. Ugh. I finished the book I was reading last Sunday, so yay for that :) Haven't started anything new just yet, trying to take it easy. My cold left, sort of. But my bumps might have gotten infections, so I'm feverish and not doing so well. Sigh. Might need antibiotics on Monday. So rude. I had a hospital visit this week; tests were good, thankfully :) But oh, it was the longest day with swimming and shopping and eating. Ahh. I'm still exhausted, ha :) But ohh. I have started taking daily walks again, finally. Been so long without. It's good for me, ha :) I have also played more Pokemon Go this week, which is the best. Love my new plus +, haha. But yeah. I am also so very tired these days. Which sucks. Shall spent my evening today watching movies. <3 I saw the final episodes of The Witcher. I love it, but a bit meh. And now it is over, I guess? With the main actor gone, replaced, it will not be the same at all. Ugh. Hope they change their minds. Hmph. Anyway. I maaay have gotten too much mail this week, ahh! All the books. <3 Love. All the SDCC pop figures, oops :) A couple of new posts. I shared my review of Find Him Where You Left Him Dead :) This week I'm waiting on The Hemlock Queen. <3 Ohh. Also. "Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

THE HEMLOCK QUEEN (The Nightshade Crown #2)
BY HANNAH F. WHITTEN

Goodreads Description:

In the second installment of New York Times bestselling author Hannah Whitten's lush, romantic epic fantasy series, a young woman who can raise the dead must navigate the dangerous and glamorous world of the Sainted King's royal court.

The corrupt king August is dead. Prince Bastian has seized the throne and raised Lore—a necromancer and former smuggler—to his right hand side. Together they plan to cut out the rot from the heart of the sainted court and help the people of Dellaire. But not everyone is happy with the changes. The nobles are sowing dissent, the Kyrithean Empire is beating down their door, and Lore's old allies are pulling away. Even Prince Bastian's changed. No longer the hopeful, rakish, charismatic man Lore knows and loves, instead he's reckless, domineering and cold.

And something's been whispering in her ear. A voice, dark and haunting, that's telling her there's more to the story than she knows and more to her power than she can even imagine. A truth buried deep that could change everything.

With Bastian's coronation fast approaching and enemies whispering on all sides, Lore must figure out how to protect herself, her prince, and her country before they all come crumbling down and whatever dark power has been creeping through the catacombs is unleashed.

Review: Find Him Where You Left Him Dead by Kristen Simmons

This was a book I had to read as soon as I could. As I have been a fan of Kristen for many years now and would read anything new by her, despite being a few books behind, oops. And this new one looks awesome and sounded spooky. But oh. I have some mixed thoughts about this. In one word: disappointed. I expected more.

I'm not sure how to write down my feelings. I'm sadly giving it two stars. I had truly hoped to love it. Was expecting to love it. But did not. That is disappointing to me. This review of mine is not going to be very positive, but I also did not hate this book, which was a plus. Will do my best to share my honest thoughts about all of it.

But where to begin. I have so many thoughts yet not sure if I will be able to share them all, ha. The book was pretty short. And yet it took me a long time to read this. Beginning with the writing. I did not like it. At all. Which hurt my heart. It's a story told from several point of views, which I must admit to not actually liking. Oops. But my biggest issue with this was that I did not care for a single one of them. And the writing just made me care less, I guess. It all felt a little weird. I will say that I think this book would have been better if it had been set in an actual fantasy world. Probably just me. As I do not like contemporary stories at all. Well, most of the time. I have read a few books I loved. But most of the time I do not like reading about our world and school and all that. Ugh.

I think that is why I had issues with the writing. Was too much from our world that I just did not care about at all. I was more interested in the other world they would end up in. Was so excited about the scary parts and the boy they left behind. But I was disappointed by that. I was not scared one time. Not a single time. Which do hurt my heart as I was truly expecting to love this story. Sigh. It may just be me, though. Yeah. For me, it was not enough. The scary scenes were too tame and too boring. I just wish it had been more.

Okay. So. This book tells the story of five teenagers, seventeen years old. Four years earlier they played a game in a cave. One of them never came out. After that, they fell apart. They were best friends before. But not any longer. We get to see a little bit of their lives now. Madeline is a swimmer. Emerson dropped out of school and is playing games. Owen is in the school plays. Dax is alone and not doing so well. Ian was the one left behind, probably dead. They do not know. And told everyone else that they did not know.

I think this is one of the things that bothered me most. How they were supposed to be such great friends. Yet one of them went missing in a cave. They did not look for him. And then they were not friends at all anymore. Felt weird to me and made me not like any of them. Oops. Only one I did like was Dax. Maybe Owen too, sometimes. But yes. Dax was my favorite. And of course he was the one who had secrets and a terrible backstory. How rude. Yet pretty exciting as well, the one part of the book I truly enjoyed reading.

This story is about the four of them being told to come back to the cave to play before dawn. To try to get Ian back, or he will be gone forever and they will be too. It seemed creepy and exciting. Then it just was not. Sigh. I'm not going to say too much about this plot, as it was pretty short and it is best to read about it yourself. It is based on different Japanese stories, which I liked a whole lot. The history of everything felt well done, I just did not care too much about the story, sadly. Like the summary says: a little like Jumanji.

They end up in a different world, somewhat. They meet an old lady who tells them the rules of the game. Mostly. They need to complete seven challenges before dawn and survive to leave together. It will not be easy. I wish I had found it all to be more exciting. Sigh. Some of these challenges were a little creepy, like the skin guy. But it was also just too tame. I wanted more action and more pain and more hurt. I wanted to care for the characters. I did not. They were getting closer again, I guess. I did not see it. I did not care.

I'm not going to say much more, though I have so many more thoughts. Oops. Shared too much already. Anyway. I was not at all happy with the ending. My favorite character did not have a good one. How rude. But it also very much set up a second book. Which I have not seen anything about, so really hoping that will come. Because, yes. Even though I did not love this one, I still want to read a second book, haha. It felt like only half the story. But I will say that the history of the place they end up in was pretty interesting.

Find Him Where You Left Him Dead was an interesting book to read. Not scary to me. But was still pretty exciting at times and I wanted to know more about the history of everything. I just. Did not care. Which is why I did not like this book very much. But I am positive that others will love it. And I still think you should all give it a try. I was lucky enough to trade for a stunning ARC copy of this book. And I will still be getting my pre-ordered hardcover as well. As I so love this cover. And this author. So yes. Go pre-order this too.

Remy names the dragon Storm and vows to protect this new friend, no matter the cost.

Against the king’s wishes, she accesses forbidden research and discovers the secret to saving humanity may lie in a True Dragon—a dragon capable of intelligent thought and able to cast and use magic. RUTHLESS VOWS (Letters of Enchantment #2)
BY REBECCA ROSS

Goodreads Description:

The epic conclusion to the intensely romantic and beautifully written story that started in DIVINE RIVALS.

Two weeks have passed since Iris Winnow returned home bruised and heartbroken from the front, but the war is far from over. Roman is missing, and the city of Oath continues to dwell in a state of disbelief and ignorance. When Iris and Attie are given another chance to report on Dacre’s movements, they both take the opportunity and head westward once more despite the danger, knowing it’s only a matter of time before the conflict reaches a city that’s unprepared and fracturing beneath the chancellor’s reign.

Since waking below in Dacre’s realm, Roman cannot remember his past. But given the reassurance that his memories will return in time, Roman begins to write articles for Dacre, uncertain of his place in the greater scheme of the war. When a strange letter arrives by wardrobe door, Roman is first suspicious, then intrigued. As he strikes up a correspondence with his mysterious pen pal, Roman will soon have to make a decision: to stand with Dacre or betray the god who healed him. Review: Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

A friend recently told me to read this book. And so I had to buy it. I had missed hearing about it before then. And it hurts my heart to know I almost did not have this book in my life. Because, gosh. I loved it so very much. Five stars. And that cover is the prettiest. Eee. But now my heart is broken, waiting for book two. How rude.

I'm honestly not sure how to write this review of mine. I feel out of words. I just know how much I loved this story. How stunning the writing was. How very adorable those two main characters were. How amazing the romance was, once it got started. How brutal it was to read about the war that was happening. Just. I loved it all.

It's so difficult to decide what to share about the plot of this book. Well, where to start. It takes place in the past, I think. But not our world. It is a world that had gods. Two of them have woken after sleeping for centuries. One, a god of music. One, a god of death and war. I think. We learn a little about them, about all the myths. I liked reading about it. Because of these gods waking up again, there is a war. And that we learn a whole lot about in this book. It was both awful and awesome to read about. This is the story of eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow. It begins with her older brother going off fighting in the war. Iris staying at home with their mother. Supposed to stay in school. But five months pass and life is not the same. She has dropped out of school and now works at a paper, writing articles. Trying to feed herself and her mom.

This book begins a little slow. But I did not mind. I so liked getting to know Iris and her life. I did not like her mother. I suppose she was good, before she started drinking and throwing away all their money and things. She should have been taking care of Iris. Instead Iris is taking care of her. I so did not approve. Of course, this ends badly, and that was heartbreaking, to be honest. I so enjoyed reading about Iris working at this paper. Though her boss was not nice at all. Ugh. But I liked the other people that she worked with.

Especially Roman Kitt. Sigh. The most precious boy. Okay, Iris hated him. And he appeared to hate her too. Which was not actually the case and oh, how I loved reading from his point of view, to know all his secrets. Sigh. He was the very best. At first they are enemies. Working at the same place, both trying to win a promotion only one of them will get. Always competing. That slowly starts to change, as they start spending a little time together. And it was so good. Sigh. But then Iris leaves. Because her mom dies. Oh.

And so this story changes. Iris goes to the war, to be a correspondent. To try to get closer to her brother, who has not written her a single letter since he left five months before. But she wrote to him. And that is another plot of this book. The magical letters. She wrote him letters on her typewriter, and pushed them into their wardrobe. They disappeared. She hoped her brother was getting them, but he never responded. Until someone else does, a while before she leaves. That is Roman. Eee. She doesn't know it, but he do.

That was a plot twist that I both enjoyed and not, haha. The magical letters were written well and I loved that. I loved reading what they wrote to each other. Sigh. It was sweet and fun too. But it did hurt my heart that Roman knew it was Iris from the start, but she did not know it was him. Not for a while. He was falling for her both ways, in letters and in person. And she was slowly falling for two different people. Or so she thought. That hurt. But it was not written badly, not truly. It was not cruel. And so I did not mind that much.

We get to know so much about Roman Kitt. About his awful father and all he wants from him. About his very adorable nan, ha. About his dead little sister, which was way too heartbreaking to read about. I loved reading about this boy. He was the sweetest. I loved reading about his growing relationship with Iris. It did begin as hate. All they did was annoy each other while they worked at the same place. Until her mother died. And she decided to leave her home. And Roman was left behind. For a while, that is. Ha. I loved it.

There is much to know about Iris too. I loved how gentle and sweet she was. Yet fierce. Reading about her arriving at a new place was all kinds of great. She is grieving. But she is so strong too. And getting to know Attie and Marisol was great too, she needed those close friends. I loved reading about this war. It was evil but written so good. So much happens. Iris have to see a lot, though not that many brutal things. And then Roman arrives too. He followed her. He left his whole life behind for her. Oh, that hurt my heart.

Of course, Iris does not know that Roman is the boy she is writing letters with. That complicated things. Sigh. But it did not take too long before she figured it all out. And that hurt too. Gosh. But it was so good after it, eee. The romance finally happened. And it was the sweetest. Oh. How badly I wanted these two together. How amazing it was when they were together. How badly it hurt to read about Roman being hurt in the trenches, when they visited there. Shudders. Just. This book was too precious to me. I loved it so.

And now I have written way too much about this story. And have still not really said what it is about. But not going to write more either, ha. Just sharing my love for this book. And my love is big. But I now need every copy there is, and that will not be an easy thing to find. How rude. Divine Rivals was perfection to me. The writing was gorgeous and the characters were too precious. I am so happy that I read this book. Well. Mostly. That ending was all kinds of cruel. I must have the second book now. Hmph. Do read it too.

Waiting on Wednesday #611

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

HER RADIANT CURSE BY ELIZABETH LIM

Goodreads Description:

From the New York Times bestselling author of SIX CRIMSON CRANES comes a tale of two sisters—one as beautiful as the other is monstrous— who must fight to save each other when a betrothal contest gone wrong unleashes an evil that could sever their bond forever.

One sister must fall for the other to rise.

Channi was not born a monster. But when her own father offered her in sacrifice to the tiger witch, she was forever changed. Cursed with a serpent's face, Channi is the exact opposite of her beautiful sister Vanna—the only person in the village who looks at Channi and doesn’t see a monster. The only person she trusts.

Now seventeen, Vanna is to be auctioned off in a vulgar betrothal contest that will enrich the coffers of the village leaders. Only Channi, who’s had to rely on her strength and cunning all these years, can defend her sister against the cruelest of the suitors. But in doing so, she becomes the target of his wrath—launching a series of vicious gladiatorial fights, a quest over land and sea, romance between sworn enemies, and a choice that will strain Channi's heart to its breaking point.

Weaving together elements of The Selection and Ember in the Ashes with classic tales like Beauty and the Beast and Helen of Troy, Elizabeth Lim is at the absolute top of her game in this thrilling yet heart-wrenching fantasy that explores the dark side of beauty and the deepest bonds of sisterhood.
