Review: Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre

The cover for this book is one of the most gorgeous ones. It just makes me happy to look at it, hih. Just so beautiful. I love it. I've been excited about this book for many months. That I just had to start it a few days after I finally got my hardcover. I wanted to really love it. But, I'm sorry to say, I had some issues.

First I want to say that I adore Ann. And I loved her other YA books. Which just makes me even more sad that I failed to love this one. I tried so hard to love it. But I couldn't. It is a three star for me. Sometimes it was better. But sometimes, it was worse. Which just makes me sad. Sigh. I'll try to explain.

I will not say too much about the plot in this book. As I don't want to give everything away. And, well, I don't think I would be able to explain it, lol. For the most part I really liked the plot. It was a bit different. What I didn't like, was that it was a bit too much at times. I didn't understand it. And I'm not sure I wanted to. But still, I did enjoy this book. And I'm glad I read it. And I cannot wait to read the next books in this trilogy. <3 As I do think I will like book two even more. Anyway. Mortal Danger is told from the point of view of Edie. Whom I can't decide if I adored or disliked. I did like her a lot. But I didn't fully love her either. Sigh. Fast explained: She is ugly. She is jumping off a bridge. Then a boy touches her shoulder and offers her a deal. Three favors now, three favors returned later. She accepts. This is where everything goes wrong.

Edie's first wish is to be beautiful. So she turns skinny and very different in looks. Okay, not that different, just more beautiful. But not in a normal way. And that bothered me a little bit. I'm not sure I liked that she had to change. That she had to become skinny and pretty. (Because this option is not for me. Hmph.) Anyway. I did enjoy reading about Edie. And I felt so much for her. And I connected to how she had it too.. kind of. But I'm still conflicted. Because I didn't get why she had to get a new look. Sigh.

There is one thing that bothered me in the beginning of this book. If I had loved the rest of it, I would have let it go. But I didn't. Sigh. So this issue bothered me even more. The boy that saves her is Kian. Who is also beyond beautiful. She falls for him. Asks him to give her her first kiss. Which I adored. But then, day after, she is on a summer school things for weeks, and she gets a summer boyfriend whom she kisses and spend time with. I didn't like that at all. Didn't see the point of it. Sigh. Just, not for me.

She also gets a friend there, her first, named Vi. Her I really liked. But we don't see enough about her, as the summer thing is only for a few pages. Then the real school begins, with Edie getting her revenge on the people at her school. The people who bullied her every day for years. And hmph. I got it. Kind of. But Edie didn't hate them as much anymore. Which I liked. I liked the new friends she made. Jen was awesome. But I still didn't really see the need of her being beautiful. I would have loved her either way.

I'm still unsure about Edie's parents. They were very distant. And didn't try to help her. But they got better. And her mom starting doing things with her. And I loved that. It was sweet. But hah. It did not end well. Seriously. That was very shocking for me. And heartbreaking. And kind of perfect, to be honest. Ack. Then there is the romance. And Kian. While I loved it, I felt like he had too many feelings for Edie. She didn't do enough for him to love her so much. But I'm hoping that will change in the sequel.

There is so much happening in Mortal Danger. Sometimes I loved it. Sometimes it bothered me. And hah. Other times it got pretty boring, as a lot of time passed with nothing happening. Anyway. There is a lot of brutal deaths in this book. And I loved every single one of them. Especially the first one. With the face. Shudders. I loved that, lol. I kind of wish there had been more death and more horror in this book, as I would have loved the book more then. Don't get me wrong. I did enjoy it. Just, not loved.

I don't want to say more about this. Although I could probably talk about it for ages, as there are many things I want to discuss. But they are all spoilers, so I will say nothing. Just, I'm a bit sad that I did not love Mortal Danger. Sniffs. But I'm still glad that I read it. And I will be waiting for the sequel. <3 Which I'm hoping to like more. As the ending for this book is pretty awesome. I liked the last fifty pages the most. They were all kinds of interesting and creepy. So yes. I'm really looking forward to book two. Ohh. Kian. I forgot to fully mention him. I adored him. His past is sad and heartbreaking. And he's awesome.

  1. I had a hard time with this one as well, Carina. Though I was less generous than you. I just couldn't like the character, and that for me is a book killer. :(

  2. I've not seen that anyone loved this one all the way. It was too much put into one book I think...and the romance started pretty well but it went a bit too extreme/fast for me. I wanted it to slow down some. I did love the creepy parts and I'll probably read the next book but overall it was a disappointment to me too :-(

  4. YAY, I'm glad you didn't outright hate this book or anything, Carina! Three stars is still pretty positive :) I liked this book. I feel like a lot of people gave up after the first half... but the second half is where it gets really good, in my opinion. I didn't LOVE the main character, but I understood her, which is important.

    Fantastic review, Carina!

  5. I agree! I think the next book will be better! Edie is hard to like at times, definitely, but I could understand her mostly as well. The ending is definitely better than most of the rest of the book, which is part of my high hopes for the next one. :) Great review, Carina!

  6. I'm sorry this one didn't completely work out for you. I know how much you were looking forward to it. :( BUT now I'm glad I haven't picked it up yet, because that summer boyfriend would totally bother me too! What's the point?!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, lady. I hope the next book goes better for you! <3

  8. Sorry to hear you only liked this. I hate the feeling of reading a book that doesn't wow me. I keep looking at my percentage read on my kindle when that happens and it just takes forever. At least you liked it enough to want to pick up the next one. Great review, Carina. :)
