Review: Serpentine by Philip Pullman

There was no way that I would not be reading this newest Lyra short story by Philip. And I finally had the chance to do so. As with his other ones, this was so very short. Which was a little sad, as I would have loved to stay in Lyra's mind a little longer. But it was still such a great short story. I did love it very much.

Giving it five stars. Too short, though. But perfect even so. And the illustrations by Tom Duxbury were incredibly gorgeous. So many of them too, mostly of Lyra and Pan. Pretty. Since it was so short, I'm only sharing a little bit about it. I am such a huge fan of the His Dark Materials trilogy. It's simply the best series.

I loved La Belle Sauvage too. Still not happy about The Secret Commonwealth, though. But I still have hope that book three will be better, that it will make the second one better. Oh, how I hope. It can go a very wrong way too, which I very much hope not. Because of my love of these books, of course I needed to read this very short story too. There is little happening. It takes place one year after Lyra's Oxford, so when she is a teenager. She and Pan have travelled north again. I liked reading about how the north had changed, after the war. It is not the same. We get to see more of Lyra and Pan together, and they are the cutest. Already starting to grow apart, which I still do not approve of. I'm still angry. It better be ten times better in book three. Hmph.

Nothing much happened in Serpentine. It was a gorgeous little book. With stunning artwork. The writing was amazing too, which is always the case with books by Philip Pullman. I just wish it had been longer. But even so, I loved this little peek at teenage Lyra and Pan. Loved learning a little more about the north again too. If you are a fan of this trilogy, like I am, then I very much think you should read this adorable small book too. I just wish there will be news about the third Book of Dust soon. My heart is so worried.

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

WINTERKEEP BY KRISTIN CASHORE

Goodreads Description:

Something is rotten in the heart of Winterkeep...

Four years after Bitterblue left off, a new land has been discovered to the east: Torla; and the closest nation to Monsea is Winterkeep. Winterkeep is a land of miracles, a democratic republic run by people who like each other, where people speak to telepathic sea creatures, adopt telepathic foxes as pets, and fly across the sky in ships attached to balloons.

But when Bitterblue’s envoys to Winterkeep drown under suspicious circumstances, she and Giddon and her half sister, Hava, set off to discover the truth–putting both Bitterblue’s life and Giddon’s heart to the test when Bitterbue is kidnapped. Giddon believes she has drowned, leaving him and Hava to solve the mystery of what’s wrong in Winterkeep.

Lovisa Cavenda is the teenage daughter of a powerful Scholar and Industrialist (the opposing governing parties) with a fire inside her that is always hungry, always just nearly about to make something happen. She is the key to everything, but only if she can figure out what’s going on before anyone else, and only if she’s willing to transcend the person she’s been all her life.

Gosh. Suddenly realized that I had yet to share about this most perfect looking book on my blog. What even. I haven't done cover reveal posts in so long. And have missed out on sharing about many books. Oops. So I forgot about this one too. And oh my gosh. I'm so very excited for Winterkeep. Eee. Graceling is still my most favorite book. That whole trilogy is perfection. And this is pretty much a direct sequel to Bitterblue. And I cannot wait at all. Okay, I have waited forever already, and now it's almost out. Eee. I must re-read the Graceling trilogy first, though. Which I suddenly realized I have not done in four years in a couple of months now. What even. I love these books so so much. Sigh. Must re-read shortly. Anyway. This cover is gorgeous. And the new trilogy covers looks amazing too. I am so excited about this book :)

In My Mailbox #479

Whoops. This past week went by even faster than last week, if that is even possible. Gosh. I haven't read anything yet. Aw. And I haven't taken a new instagram photo either. Oops. Soon, I hope. Been busy this week with my new laptop, which I love. And as always, Animal Crossing. Which is still the best. Sigh. But yeah. I really hope to read something this coming week. Fingers crossed for me. Also, nothing in the mail this week either. Just after Christmas is always slow. Maybe something next week :) Do have a few books pre-ordered. Was going to order more on the first of this month, which I do every month, but gosh, book depository has stopped shipping to the EU. What even. I hope this is a very short break. It's breaking my heart. Cannot buy books from anywhere else. Cannot buy books that I do not pre-order first, for a lower price. Uuugh. Please fix this issue. Sigh. So sharing my latest instagram photo, though it is daaays old now. And sharing two gorgeous eARCs I have downloaded from Edelweiss lately, as I was autoapproved. So excited for them both. Just, yeah. No idea when I will feel like reading again. Sigh. So only one new blog post. This week I'm waiting on Heartless Heirs. <3 I have been in a lot of pain this past week. Ow. Which fully sucks. I hope next week will be better. Hope you are all doing okay too. It's dangerous times.

Red Wolf. I am so very excited for this book. It looks stunning and sounds so very awesome. Can't wait.
My Contrary Mary. Eee. So excited for this too. I just need to read the third Jane book first. Oops. Soon.

Now without a home and on the run, Aissa has never felt so trapped and alone even with her sister and friend by her side. Zandria—once her other half—has become cold and inflexible after her time in the Technocrat’s dungeon and is bent on revenge Aissa no longer feels. Their friend Remy may still side with his father, a Magi leader who refuses to believe his spy, Darian Azul, has turned traitor. And Aissa herself is now an enemy of her Magi people after falling in love with—and binding her heart to—Aro, a Techno prince who puts all their lives at stake.

Using clues her parents and others left behind, Aissa is determined to uncover the secrets of the Alchemist Alliance that helped create her and Zandria’s unique magical powers … as well as learn whether the Alliance’s research holds the key to healing the rift between the Magi and Technocrats after centuries of war. In My Mailbox #478

Another week gone by. Gosh. So fast. And all my Christmas things have been put away. Sobs. Haha :D Is it November again soon? Sigh. Christmas time is the best :) But very much looking forward to it finally getting light again outside soon. Some weeks left to go. And cannot wait for summer. So far away. Hoping we might actually get some heat this year, ha. I have been so busy this week. Taking my sauna each day, which is the best. But gosh, I am exhausted. No reading done either. Not yet. Soon, I hope. I got nothing in the mail this week. So no new photo either. Just my regular instagram photo and an update, as always :) Was too few days with mail. And I'm not really waiting on much either. Hopefully something new next week. I also might have bought myself a new laptop today. What. Even. I could not really afford it. But it was on sale, the one I wanted. And the one I have has had issues since I got it three years ago. Ugh. So bought a new one. Aaack. It looks awesome, though. I'm hoping it will have zero issues :) This week I'm waiting on Realm Breaker :) And I shared my Best Books of 2020 post too. <3 I hope you are all doing well and staying safe. I'm doing the best I can. Norway had a big scary natural accident this week. It's all over the news and people are still missing. Thinking of them. Feel so sad for them, all that they have lost.
