Review: Let the Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger

One of the things I love the most about this book is the gorgeous cover. It is simply breathtaking. I love it so much, and it couldn't have been better. And oh. The names. Vane and Audra. They are unique and special and I adore them. I have wanted Let the Sky Fall for so many months. And I must say that it was worth the wait. I loved it. And I need the next one right away. <3 Think the sequel will be amazing as well :)

You should also know that I totally adore the author, Shannon. She is the sweetest. And I love her other series; Keeper of the Lost Cities. <3 Amazing middle grade books. She is an amazing writer. And I just really love her :) So that was another reason for why I could not wait to read Let the Sky Fall. When it finally arrived, I had to read it right away. And I'm really glad I did :)

The plot in Let the Sky Fall is really unique. Don't think I have ever heard of a book like this before. And that is good. Because this book is special. And I loved that. It is about Windwalkers. Like Audra. Who can talk to the wind, tell it to do things. Like carry her on it. And attack people. And it is just all kinds of awesome. I loved reading and learning so many amazing things about it. I cannot remember all the names, though (A) But they are amazing.

This book centers around Audra and Vane. The book is from both point of views, one each chapter. I loved that. Loved getting to read from them both. That was great. And I enjoyed getting to know them both. Might have loved Vane the most, though (A) He's just amazing. Sweet and kind. But he's had kind of a hard life. Well, not that hard. He has his mom and dad, adoptive parents. I adored them. But oh. His parents were killed when he was 7, and he lost all his memories. Except the dream about this girl.

Then we meet Audra. I really liked her. She's strong and sweet. I loved her pet bird ;) Kind of, lol. But she is also broken. And that was pretty sad. But also pretty amazing. She's been all alone for the past ten years. Hunted by something she did when her dad died, and Vane's parents died. It was kind of awful. I loved it. But yeah. She has so much guilt locked up inside her. And it's kind of destroying her. That I did not like. Because it was sad. But also amazing, since it made sense. But yeah. I loved Audra :)

We learn a lot about Vane and Audra. Many things that I loved. A few things I disliked. Like Vane dating. That was kind of awful. Did not approve. But I also sort of loved it. And omg. That thing about a kiss. I loved that in this book so much. Amazing. Can't wait to learn more about it in book two :) Anyway. I loved the writing in this book. And the characters. Mostly we just get to see Vane and Audra, but I totally loved that. I even felt like we didn't get enough of them. I suppose that is a very good thing ;p

I'm not going to say more about the plot. Even though I haven't really said anything :D But we learn a lot about the wind. And I loved that. It was amazing to read about, and I cannot wait to learn more. There is some action scenes. I loved those too. And the end climax. It was pretty amazing. Then there is the romance. There isn't that many romantic scenes, but there is a love story. And I loved it. It's kind of forbidden, though, which I might have loved even more. It's just pretty perfect. I want so much more :)

There might have been a tiny thing I disliked I little bit. But only this tiny thing. And only a little bit :) I had a few issues with getting into the writing at first. And I'm not sure why. Because I love Shannon's writing. The one thing that bothered me a little bit was that Audra was trying so hard not to like Vane. That was a bit sad. But I also understood it so much, in a way, so I can't really dislike it at all ;p So yeah. I did not have anything about this book that I didn't love. Not really. And I just enjoyed it a whole lot.

I think you should read Let the Sky Fall as soon as you can. Because it is amazing. And I did love it. And I think you will too. Also, you need to own that gorgeous hardcover. Cause it is perfect. So, so perfect. Love. I'm super excited for book two, and I cannot wait for it to come out. I wished there had been a tiny bit more romance, but oh. There is tension. And I did love the little romance that there is. And yeah. It is awesome. And I just adored Vane and Audra so much. They are both so damn amazing.

Unremembered Blog Tour: Guest Post with Jessica Brody + Giveaway

I'm so happy to be a part of the the Unremembered blog tour! I loved this book. It is pretty amazing. And you all need to read it now that it's out :) My guest post with Jessica is about supporting roles. And it is amazing! I truly love what Jessica wrote for my post. You must read it. It's amazing. Sigh. Also, thanks to Macmillan, there is an US/Canada giveaway at the end of the post :) You want this book.

And the Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role goes to...

by Jessica Brody

I have Oscar on the brain. And no, sadly, Oscar is not a hot, swoon-worthy love interest in a new YA romance novel (I wish!). But rather the little gold man who stands atop of the most prestigious statue in Hollywood. With the Academy Awards still in our TV rear-view mirrors, I thought it only appropriate that I hold my own little award show here on Carina’s Books. And in honor of Anne Hathaway’s big exciting win, I’ve decided that ALL the awards will be going to…Supporting Roles.

Sometimes readers (and writers) are so focused on the lead characters of the book, we forget about all the great people who are standing behind them, propping them up, making them look good (or bad, depending on the book), and rounding out the story, so I thought it would be fun to dedicate an entire post to the supporting roles of my book. As they played such important parts in the story.

And it seems that all of my supporting characters have a fun “behind the scenes” story associated with them so I thought I would share those as well. So...without further ado, I present three awards for the Best Performances in a Supporting Role:

The award for the “Character Most Determined to Stay in the Book” goes to...

CODY CLARK

(applause!)

Cody is Seraphina’s socially-awkward 13-year-old foster brother who aides and abeds Sera’s unauthorized field trip to follow a “clue” about her past that leads her 200 miles away from her foster home. He also teaches Sera about every day things (that she strangely has no familiarity with) like cell phones, computers, the internet, and credit cards.

The reason Cody deserves this award is because during a very early revision of the book, my editor strongly suggested I cut him completely from the story. She claimed that he didn’t serve enough of a purpose and kind of “got in the way.” This comment surprised me (and saddened me a little) because Cody was one of my favorite characters to write! He’s moody and sarcastic and totally uncomfortable around Sera who he calls an “amnesiac supermodel.”

I argued that Cody is necessary to the story because he represents an “average teen.” Sera is so far out of the norm (with her exquisite beauty and superhuman skills and complete ignorance of the modern world) I feared that readers would have trouble relating to anyone in the book. So I created Cody to serve that purpose. His reactions, I believe, are similar to how an everyday teen reader might react to someone as “off” as Sera. Plus he’s the comic relief of the story. When anything gets too heavy or serious, Cody can always be counted on to crack a joke and lighten the mood a bit.

Not to mention Cody plays a significantly larger role in book 2...but more on that later (much later.)

In the end, my editor came around to my side. It’s always a little nerve wracking, disagreeing with your editor. But I think we made the right choice. Several readers have already told me how much they love Cody. And while my editor was reading my manuscript for book 2 (which comes out next year), she specifically texted me to say, “Okay, I’m glad we kept him.” :)

The award for the “Character Who Can’t Decide if They’re Male or Female” goes to...

DR. RYLAN MAXXER

Anyone who’s ever read an “ARC” knows that ARCs are advance, unproofed bound copies of the book that the publisher prints for earlier reviewers which may or may not be full of typos. In fact, the publisher usually slaps a big warning label on the front of the book that alerts people to the fact that there might be glaring typos inside.

Never has that warning been more appropriate than in the case of UNREMEMBERED.

In the beginning there was a character named Maxxer. He was a scientist who Sera meets toward the end of the story, who helps her piece together the final puzzle pieces of the mystery about who she is and where she came from. He was a kind man who sympathized with Sera and her plight and just wanted to help.

And then one day, late in the revision process, someone at the publishing house made a comment to me. She said, “Why are so many of the scientists in this story men? Are there no women scientists in this world?”

This was an excellent point. I had no real reason for making all the scientists in the story men...it just unconsciously turned out that way. But I also didn’t really like that this was the case. So I decided to turn Maxxer into a woman. Instant sex change!

I spent a few days, tweaking the story and the character and of course, going through the manuscript and making sure all the hes became shes and all the hims became hers but apparently a few were missed and ended up printed in the ARCs.  And yes, MANY people have contacted me asking me why Maxxer seems so terribly undecided about his/her gender.

It was pretty mortifying. But I’ll tell you. These kind of things happen. At least I ended up with a great story to tell!

The award for the “Character with the Most Unpronounceable Name” goes to...

DR. HAVIN RIO

Okay, so I know this name doesn’t look hard to pronounce and the truth is, it’s not…now. But when I first wrote the proposal for the trilogy, Rio, the scientist who Sera meets halfway through the book, was actually written as Ryo.

In my head, it was easy. I pronounced it like the Japanese would pronounce it. With kind of an L/R sound, rhyming with low. Like “yo” with a slight rolled “r” sound in front of it.” But yes, even as I type that, I realize that I can’t even explain how to pronounce it. And every time my agent or editor would talk about the character they would have some other crazy way of saying it. RI-YO, R-YO, Ry-o. I eventually couldn’t take it anymore. I thought about all the confused looks on the faces of readers and I cracked. I decided to change the name. I went with Rio. (Pronounced ree-o) Partly because I liked the sound of it and partly because I had just gotten back from an amazing trip to Rio to promote The Karma Club and was still enamored with the city.

Unfortunately I can’t tell you much about Rio’s character without spoiling a large chunk of the plot. Just know this. In addition to the award listed above, Rio would also win the award for “The Character Who Knows the ENTIRE Truth About Seraphina.” And he’s the only one who would even be nominated in this category. J

Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope you enjoy UNREMEMBERED!

Waiting on Wednesday #73

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

SEVERED HEADS, BROKEN HEARTS BY ROBYN SCHNEIDER

Goodreads Description:

Golden boy Ezra Faulkner believes everyone has a tragedy waiting for them—a single encounter after which everything that really matters will happen. His particular tragedy waited until he was primed to lose it all: in one spectacular night, a reckless driver shatters Ezra’s knee, his athletic career, and his social life.

No longer a front-runner for Homecoming King, Ezra finds himself at the table of misfits, where he encounters new girl Cassidy Thorpe. Cassidy is unlike anyone Ezra’s ever met, achingly effortless, fiercely intelligent, and determined to bring Ezra along on her endless adventures.

But as Ezra dives into his new studies, new friendships, and new love, he learns that some people, like books, are easy to misread. And now he must consider: if one’s singular tragedy has already hit and everything after it has mattered quite a bit, what happens when more misfortune strikes?

Robyn Schneider’s Severed Heads, Broken Hearts is a lyrical, witty, and heart-wrenching novel about how difficult it is to play the part that people expect, and how new beginnings can stem from abrupt and tragic endings.

Review: Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

I don't know yet how to feel about Code Name Verity. It is an amazing book. Full of heartbreak and a few sweet moments. But it also wasn't as perfect as I thought it would be. I wanted it to be more awful, in a way. But it isn't. We don't get to see any of the torture, which probably was a good thing, but I still wanted it, at least a tiny bit of it. This book focus for the most part on a friendship between two girls. And I loved that. Truly. But I did have a few issues with the writing. Didn't love it.

The writing in this book is a bit weird. Because it is told from two different point of views, but in a different way. It is told in writing. Past-tense. I'm not entirely pleased with it; wished it had been first-person, but it did make sense, and I did enjoy it. Just didn't like the writing that much. But I still managed to fall in love with this book, with the characters and the story :)

I don't know how to describe this book. I really don't. And I know my review won't be very long, because I don't really want to spoil anything ;) First, I thought this would be a short book, just over 300 pages. But oh. Code Name Verity took ages to read. Which I loved :) I won't recap the summary. But yeah. This book is about two girls at war. They are best friends. And some really bad things happen. This is the story of their friendship, and everything they go through. I did love it.

I don't know how to start. But I suppose I should start with the main character, the girl we get to know through most of the book, the point of view we read for most of the book. We shall call her Verity. She has quite many names, to be honest. A bit confusing, but I did understand them all. Anyway. I kind of adored her. The stories she told of herself and Maddie. It was amazing. Verity seemed like such an amazing person. Sweet and kind. But also fierce and amazing. She was awesome. I loved her a lot.

So of course it's her that is in the French prison. I hated it. Really, truly hated it. But. I also wanted more from it. I wanted more about the torture. I felt like we didn't get to see it at all, and that made it seem to me that there wasn't such awful things happening at all. Which I kind of disliked. Yeah. I wish it had been a bit more details, which is why I wanted a first-person point of view, and not letters in past-tense. But I did enjoy it. I enjoyed reading this book, for the most part, and it's an amazing novel.

We get to know so many characters in this book. Too many for me to remember all their names, cause they were pretty complicated. But I do remember Anna Engel, who works in the prison where Verity is. She seemed awful at first. But I started to like her later on. Awesome character. Then there is the person who does the torturing, v.Linden. Him I hated. But I also didn't hate him all the time. It was a bit confusing. He was an amazing character, though. But I don't think he was the villain, to be honest.

The villain of this book is Adolf Hitler, and the war. I mean, it isn't about him at all, this book. But yeah. It is set in that time. I must admit to not knowing much about that time at all, except for a few important things, but after having read this book I want to read more from that time set. There is a lot of war in this book. But, yeah, not enough violence and action for me. It became boring at times. Sigh. But I loved it, still. I loved reading about the airplanes, it was interesting, just a bit much at times.

Then there is Maddie. Verity's best friend. I loved reading about her. She's a bit shy and scared a lot, but she's a pilot, and she's amazing. She and Verity are amazing friends. Sniffs. I loved them. Then there is Verity's brother, Jamie, who I also adored. Sad about his toes, though. This is not a romance book. But there is a tiny bit romance between Maddie and Jamie. Even kisses. And I adored that. Wanted more of it too, but I'm not too sad about it. Because yeah. I did love what little we got of them together :)

Code Name Verity is a book full of feels. Lots of heartbreak. Some awful things. But also some happy ones, when we get to read the story of Verity and Maddie. I did enjoy that. But yes, I also wanted a bit more from this book. I'm glad I read it, though, and I did love it. Not going to say more about it. Just that I already knew the ending before starting the book.. And yeah. It is a heartbreaking ending, and I wish it had never happened. Don't understand why it had to. Anyway. You need to read this book :)
