In My Mailbox #328

This week have been good and bad. I'm exhausted almost all the time, and stomach is back to being really bad again. Ugh. I have tried the new medicine three times now, and so far not working. Hoping it will finally start working shortly. Ugh. I hate waiting. And being in pain. But besides that, I read two books this week, and I'm happy about that. Eee. Starting another one today. Hopefully. I have traded for some awesome books, and I cannot wait to get them. So happy. Didn't get much mail this week, though. But that's okay :) Much more is coming soonish, gah. Blogged a little this week. I shared my review of The Queen's Rising :) A bit disappointing. This week I'm waiting on Queen of Air and Darkness, eee. <3 I shared my review of Contagion :D Which was awesome. And I posted the cover for Two Dark Reigns, which is gorgeous. <3 So anyway. This week has been a bit exhausting, but I'm doing mostly good even so. Still spending a lot of time with my baby niece, whom just turned a month old yesterday. She is the sweetest. And tomorrow my nephew turns eight :) Hoping I will have time to read a bunch shortly too. <3

Immortal Reign. Eee, finally, the final book is out :D Which means I can finally read the entire series, eee.
Iron Tide Rising. Yessss. Been waiting so long for this fourth and final book :D I love this series so much.
Reindeer Boy. Could not resist finally buying this. <3 I adore Cassandra Jean and her artwork. So pretty.
Tangled. I know, I know. I have way too many Tangled books already. Ahh. But I had to. It is so so cute :D

Review: Contagion by Erin Bowman

When I first heard about this book, and saw that cover, I knew I had to read it. Because I love space things. Especially books that reminds me about Alien. Which this one did, and very much too. So thrilled that I got to read this one early, as I ended up loving it very much. Eee. So good. And the writing was perfect; I loved it.

I don't know where to begin with this book. The beginning is a bit slow, yet I did like getting to know the different main characters. The writing is stunning, and just reading about space had me so happy. Eee. I'm not going to talk too much about the plot, about how the story starts and such. Just going to share why I loved it.

This book is told from a few different point of views, sometimes from a few crew members that were not main characters. But all point of views were interesting, and needed to be there. I would say that the main characters were Nova and Thea. I very much loved getting to know these two girls. This story is about how a small ship with only eight people are sent to rescue a larger ship that has stopped responding on this mostly unknown and creepy planet. There is also some political things in this book, which bored me a little bit, but was interesting too. I liked learning more about this world, and would love to see different places too, in the next book. But for this one, all of it takes place on this creepy planet. Mostly inside the ships. I loved it so. All was awesome.

There is a whole lot of things going on with this book. I did find the beginning a bit slow and boring, which is why this is a four star, but I liked reading it even so, as I did enjoy getting to know all these characters. Thea is a young intern, working for this very old doctor woman. And I loved Thea the very most. She has no training in killing or fighting, yet she is so fierce and brave at times. I wish to know even more about this girl. Her life seemed a bit sad, and I loved that too. Simply adored reading about Thea. Loved her so.

Nova was also pretty incredible. She is almost nineteen, and is an awesome pilot. Though because of some eye issues, she can not get the jobs she wants. I very much liked getting to know this girl too. She was awesome. But, well, her crush on the captain was so wrong. Loved that she was into girls. But that captain was all kinds of horrible, ahh, and I want much better for Nova. I'm glad there was no romance in this book, lol, because that woman did not deserve Nova at all. Hmph. Nova was awesome. Adored her.

There are a few other characters in this book too, but not going to talk about them. This book is about this small crew going to investigate why no one have heard from this other big ship for two months. What they find out is that they are all dead. And learning the why for that was all kinds of interesting and exciting. I loved reading about it, and figuring out how they had all died. And how there were something awful in this planet. It was a bit scary and I loved it so. So much like Alien too, which was just awesome. I love space.

What they do find, however, is one survivor. A young man. And oh, how I loved reading about Coen. Eee. I think I might have loved him the most. And shipped him and Thea the most. Ack. This book takes place in less than a day, ack, so things are moving so fast. Getting to know Coen was all kinds of fun. And sad too, considering he has been alone on this planet for two months now. With some other things too. And eee. It was so awesome to read about. And rude. And I enjoyed it all very much. I only need more. Ahh.

I'm not going to say much more about this book. Just that I loved it a whole bunch. There is space. And death. And great characters. And also this awesome twist about the contagion, that I loved very much. And am simply dying to read more about in the next book. Ahh. It's going to be so good. If I survive the wait for it. Hmph. I loved how strong Thea and Nova ended up being, when the rescue mission went bad, when they had to fight to survive. Some mistakes are made, sure, but oh, I just loved these girls so much.

The reason for why I'm giving this book a four star is because I found almost the first half of the book to be kind of boring. I got a little bit tired of reading about the different crew members, and nothing exciting happened. But when it finally got exciting, I couldn't have loved this book more. Eee. Very happy about that. Also wishing there had been romance in this one. As there was none. No hints even. But I feel very sure there will be a romance in book two. At least, I hope so, because I ship Thea and Coen very much.

Contagion was all kinds of scary and exciting. I adored the characters and could not wait to know what would happen next. The final half of the book was so good, and everything I wanted from this book. Lots of death. A little bit of hope. And utterly crushing too. Because that ending was so rude, and I'm not sure how I will survive waiting for the second book. Hmph. I need to know what happens next. It's going to be so good, and I can't wait. Huge thank you to the publisher for the eARC via Edelweiss. So happy I got it.

Review: The Queen's Rising by Rebecca Ross

Feeling a little bit conflicted about this book. Had not heard much about it, before I traded for an ARC of it. I have thought it looked gorgeous for months, but had not seen many reviews. And yet it sounded like a great book, so I hoped that I would love it. Which I sadly ended up not doing. But also did like it, some of the time.

I'm feeling so unsure about what I felt for this book. At first, I liked it a whole lot. Found the writing to be great, and enjoyed reading about the main girl. But it was also being so incredibly slow. And once I passed halfway, I sadly grew to dislike the writing and did not care for the story, and just wanted the book to be over. Gosh.

So I'm giving this book three stars. Which feels like too much, yet also too little, as I liked the beginning a lot. But sadly the rest of the book was not as good. I'm going to try my best to talk about this book. But there is so much to talk about, because it is long, and the plot is complicated, but it was also incredibly boring, so there is not that much I can mention either. Overall, though, I feel disappointed in this story. I felt like it could have been amazing. But it fell short. At least for me. I suppose some might love this book. But it ended up not really being for me. But still, a three star is still positive. Because while this book was boring, I did enjoy parts of it. Just wish it had been more. The book was good, but it was not good enough sadly. And that makes me upset.

This book is told from the point of view of Brienna. She has spent the past seven years at this sort of a school, learning about passions. Some people have a passion in life, either for music, art, wit, dramatics or knowledge. These people go to a house of passion for seven years, to learn more about their talent and grow up to be something more. Brienna does not really have a passion at all, for the first four years she tried all of them, then she stuck with knowledge for the last three years. She's somewhat good at it.

About a hundred and fifty pages of this book takes place in this house of learning. Because Brienna is about to learn if she is going to get a patron, or if she is not going to be picked, and be left with nothing. She's stressed about it. I liked this beginning a lot, because Brienna seemed pretty amazing and sweet, and I loved how she had an amazing friendship with the other five girls in this house. It was sweet to read about. Though one of them used her a little bit, and I did not like that at all. Hmph. Still, kind of interesting.

But yes. I enjoyed the beginning of the book. But when Brienna leaves this place, there is no mention of any of the girls again, save one. And that disappointed me. They were her sisters, almost. I wanted there to be more mentions of them. But anyway, before that. The summary of this book is so completely wrong, and that bothers me so much. Brienna was the one who asked for the patron, months later. She searched for him. He did not look for her, not at all. And he did not have dark vengeful thoughts either. Ugh. Weird.

Anyway. I enjoyed the beginning of this book because I liked reading about Brienna and learning about how she did at this kind of school, and how she learned more knowledge and learned many histories. Her friendships were adorable. Then there was her master, Cartier. And oh, how much I loved reading about him, how they seemed to flirt and had started to care for each other. But nothing was happening, it was not allowed, but there were hints, and it was the cutest thing. I liked reading about it a whole bunch. Cute.

But then Brienna had to leave, and the plot fully changed. Sure, the beginning was slow, and took place over about a week, but it was still so interesting to read about. But after she left this place, I got a whole bunch of bored. The patron who took her in was to be her father, and he had a son, her new brother. And it felt totally awkward to me, but was supposed to feel like she got a whole family, after having only lived with her grandfather before. But yeah. It did not feel that way to me. And was only for a few weeks. Hmm.

I'm not sure how to describe this world. It's fantasy, which I love. But was also not described well enough. I didn't feel much for this world at all. I wanted to love it, but it wasn't written well enough for me to do so. There used to be magic in this world, but over a hundred and sixty years ago. And now Brienna's newish father is looking to place a queen back on a throne, and restore the magic in that family line. Brienna is not to be this queen, thankfully, and I did like that part of this story. But sadly, it was not very exciting, aw.

Because most of this book is incredibly long and boring. Just about nothing happens. I liked the beginning a lot, sure, but the rest of the book, not so much. I did not feel like Brienna did anything. I did not feel like she had a journey or whatever. She also spent most of the book away from Cartier. Which means there was zero romance. No kiss until the final page. What. I'm incredibly disappointed. Which is also a reason for why I did not love this book. It focused a lot on politics, but not in an interesting way. I'm disappointed.

I have already written way too much about this book, and not nearly enough when I think about what is in my head about this book. The Queen's Rising was interesting, but not exciting. I liked Brienna and also Cartier, but there was no other characters to care for, not really. I did not love them, at all. Disappointed about that. I felt like this book could have been a whole lot better. But it was not. Still a three star for me, but it is also a book that I will forget about, and that makes me sad. Still, you guys should read it. Maybe.
