Review: Ghost Girl by Ally Malinenko

I have always loved ghost stories. And so this was a book that I just had to read. But it ended up disappointing me, most of the time. I'm sad to say that I'm giving this book a two star. As there were just too many things that bothered me and that I didn't like. But I did not hate this one, and there were some good parts too.

So I'm glad I read it. And that cover is just beautiful. I love it so much. I liked the writing in this book, mostly. It was not perfect, but it was not bad either. It creeped me out a few times. Though it was often a bit too dramatic and seemed fake to me. But I did like this story. I also liked the friendship between Zee and Elijah.

But I was a little bit unsure about this main girl. Zee was eleven years old. And I liked her at first. She seemed so adorable and awesome. But, well. She had a bully. Nellie. But she bullied her too. And she was not being nice to her either. And that bothered me. They spent so long hating each other. And being cruel and mean. I did not like this at all. And wish it had not been a part of this book. Then they share some type of trauma and start getting closer. And are suddenly best friends within hours. And, oh. That bothered me even more. They had been enemies for over a year. And now they are such good friends in such a short time. It felt too fake for me. Yes, I got why they started being friends, that they actually had things in common. But they had been horrible to each other for so long. I didn't like it. It was unnecessary.

But other than that, I did like Zee. She was a good person. I liked her older sister Abby, who took care of them both. I did not like how the book did not share for ages that both parents were not dead. It made it seem like they were. It took too long before we learned her mother had been dead since Zee was born. And her father had been missing for half a year, looking for work in a different town. But not calling them anymore. That bothered me too. He seemed like a great dad. But then he was gone for half a year. Yeah.

This book tells the story of Zee and her best friend Elijah. I liked him a whole lot, though. He had no flaws. He was just a kind and sweet boy and I loved how they were great friends. Zee loved telling ghost stories. I found that a little boring, but kind of cute too. But then she had the girl who bullied her. So Elijah was her only friend, which was a little depressing. Strange things start happening in town. Zee starts seeing huge dogs, more like wolves. She might even have seen a ghost or two. And there is a strange new principal.

I'm not sure how to describe the plot of this book. I'm going to mention a little, but not too much. I did not like the whole principal Scratch thing. First, weird name. Second, the way he looked. It was awkward. But yeah. This creepy guy got control of the whole town in just days, it seemed like. He was so not normal. It took Zee a bit too long to notice it, to be honest. I wish the ghost part had been a bigger part of the book. She can suddenly see ghosts. And her mom could before her. Like this was a normal thing. It was weird.

And I wish it had been written a little bit better. It was weird how her sister knew about it, since she was just ten years old when their mother died. And talking to ghosts was an awesome thing. But it was barely in the book at all, which was disappointing. Would have liked to see it more. Zee and Elijah spends this book trying to figure out what is going on in town. Figuring out how Scratch might be behind it. And Nellie starts working with them too. Now suddenly best friends with both of them. I just did not approve, haha.

But Nellie was a good person. And I did like reading about her. I just wish that whole bully part had been left out. Sigh. Since I do not think it was done very well. Both girls were honestly awful. Anyway. The book was a fast read. It should probably have been a little longer, had a bit more details. But this was a creepy story too, at times. I just did not find it scary at all, sadly. Should have had much more ghosts. Less of the weird guy. I wish I had loved this book more. But it was just a bit too weird for me. But I am glad I read it.

Then the ending of this book. It was not good at all. Spoilers coming, for those who do not want to know details. They defeated the bad guy doing what? It made no sense. Felt like half the story was missing. It was simply too rushed and without an actual plot. And then after the bad guy was gone, everything went back to normal. No one remembered anything. And suddenly the mother who was super sick was all fine. Well, mostly. The missing father was suddenly no longer missing. And stayed home. It made zero sense.

And so I cannot give this book more than two stars. I had hoped to love it more. As I adore middle grade books. And I love ghost stories. But this one had too few ghosts. Too little story. And the ending was too messy for me. Parts of the book were good. I liked the creepy parts, but sadly not all of them. I liked the friendships, yet not all of them. I suppose it is a book that is meant to tell you to trust in yourself and your friends. But I did not believe it. I wish it had been better. Ghost Girl was interesting, but sadly not for me.

In My Mailbox #725

Hi. I am still exhausted. Been in so much pain from the tooth pulling almost two weeks ago. Sigh. And so I went back to the dentist on thursday, as I could not take it any longer. Was an infection. Got antibiotics to take for about ten days. And it has gotten better since then. It still hurts, but less. Do not have to take the strong painkillers any longer, thankfully. Took a bit too many of those for so many days. Ack. But ugh. These new pills are making me so sleepy, though. But I am so happy about it as well, haha. Since I have slept so badly since I got this pain. And after I started these pills I have slept all night two nights in a row. And slept long. Sigh. It was much needed for my exhausted body. But yeah. Because of being in pain for so long, I still haven't managed to read. Ugh. I have just not felt like doing anything at all. Ahh. But I will force myself to start tomorrow :) Need to finish the book before October. Oops. Not many days left. Ahh. Rude. I can do it. Probably. Anyway. I got a whole bunch of precious mail this week, eee. <3 I finally got the new iPhone 17 Pro Max :) And it is perfect. Loving this new phone so much. But had so much trouble getting it ready. Sigh. Waiting on Wednesday #727

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

ALCHEMISED BY SENLINYU

Goodreads Description:

In this riveting dark fantasy debut, a woman with missing memories fights to survive a war-torn world of necromancy and alchemy—and the man tasked with unearthing the deepest secrets of her past.

“What is it you think you’re protecting in that brain of yours? The war is over. Holdfast is dead. The Eternal Flame extinguished. There’s no one left for you to save.”

Once a promising alchemist, Helena Marino is now a prisoner—of war and of her own mind. Her Resistance friends and allies have been brutally murdered, her abilities suppressed, and the world she knew destroyed.

In the aftermath of a long war, Paladia’s new ruling class of corrupt guild families and depraved necromancers, whose vile undead creatures helped bring about their victory, holds Helena captive.

According to Resistance records, she was a healer of little importance within their ranks. But Helena has inexplicable memory loss of the months leading up to her capture, making her enemies wonder: Is she truly as insignificant as she appears, or are her lost memories hiding some vital piece of the Resistance’s final gambit?

To uncover the memories buried deep within her mind, Helena is sent to the High Reeve, one of the most powerful and ruthless necromancers in this new world. Trapped on his crumbling estate, Helena’s fight—to protect her lost history and to preserve the last remaining shreds of her former self—is just beginning. For her prison and captor have secrets of their own . . . secrets Helena must unearth, whatever the cost.

This book came out yesterday, but I had forgotten to add it to my goodreads. Oops. So sharing about it now :) As I'm getting a Waterstones exclusive of this book. And now I'm kind of regretting it? As I just learned a couple of days ago that it is over 1000 pages long. Whaaaat. I do not have the space. Sobs. So. Yeah. I'm hoping this book will be worth it :) Have seen many love it. And I am curious about it, haha.

In My Mailbox #724

Oh. Goddamn. This week have been the actual worst. I cannot deal with it. I'm in so much pain. Ahh. It hurts so very badly. I was at the dentist on monday to pull out a tooth, not a wisdom one, but next to a removed one. As it was loose, so was better to pull it. I guess. Thought it would go fast and good, as it took five seconds to remove my latest wisdom tooth. But this did not. Took probably fifteen minutes or so to get it out. And it hurt. So much. But I thought that was it. Haaaa. I was so wrong. It's been hurting like goddamn hell this whole week. And I'm not doing better at all. Been hard to sleep. I need to take strong painkillers all day, and it doesn't really work either. It does not hurt where the tooth was. But it hurts in all the teeth next to it. Up and down. And it is the actual worst pain ever. I'm so tired of it. And it isn't getting better. But oh, I hope tomorrow will be a better day. Sigh. Anyway. It's been a hard week. So I have not gotten much done. Gotten a bunch of lovely mail, though. <3 And waiting on more awesome popmart items. <3 I went outside yesterday and today and took more instagram photos. Ahh. Now have photos planned until November 3rd. <3 Which I love. But yeah. I'm in pain. All day long. And so I have not read anything yet. I have not played anything extra. I have just been trying to take it easy, but it has not been easy at all. Everything just hurts so badly. So yeah. Fingers crossed for me that it gets better from now. As I can't take this pain. Anyway. This week I'm waiting on Red Star Rebels. <3 Hope you are all well :)

Better in Black. The final Cassandra Clare kickstarter book. <3 Gorgeous. Love the case to put them in.
The Listeners. Finally got my stunning Fairyloot edition :D Wish there had been more art. But love it. <3
Wild Reverence. My first UK edition :) It's such a gorgeous cover. Hoping to feel like reading this soonish.
Among the Burning Flowers. I don't think I have ever read books by this author. But own many of them :)
The Poisoned King. I haven't read book one yet, but I have it, as I think these books looks fully beautiful.
To Clutch a Razor. Sequel to a novella. So happy about it, ha :D I did like the first book. Hope to love this.
The Fate of Magic. Paperback edition. <3 I have not yet read this second book, though. I shall one day :)
Nintendo Switch. A case to have my Switch 2 in if I'm ever going to travel. <3 And two games I think looks great. Tales of the Shire. Lord of the Rings, eee. Funko Fusion. It's finally out on the Switch. Been ages.
Kpop Demon Hunters CD. Of course I had to buy this perfect soundtrack, haha. <3 But cracked. So rude.
Movies. Yeah. I'm still collecting blu-rays, ha. Moana 2, Norwegian. Mufasa. Wicked. Yet to see those 2.
Pop Mart. What. I got all the items this week, ahhh :D Finally got my stunning Rock the Universe. <3 She is perfect. Love the colors, eee. And whaaat. My sister bought me the Big Into Energy ID secret. Sobs. She is the actual best. <3 But goddamn. It cost a fortune. Ahhhh. I wanted to find it, but I am thrilled to finally own it, eee. And she is beautiful. Sigh. Perfection :D Decided to keep a second pink Macaron, as I want to use it on a bag one day. <3 And it's chunky, which I love, haha. Also got a new Skullpanda :) Not my favorite, sigh, but she is gorgeous. I also got a bunch of items that I'm already trying to sell, that I am not keeping. I got a whole set of Big Into Energy that I'm not keeping, no secret. I got nine other Exciting Macaron, no secret, so not keeping. Aw. But I'm going to try again sometime :) But need a little break, ha.

Pop Mart. Eeee! These had to have their own photo, haha. It is the new Pin for Love Labubus. And they are so fully gorgeous. Sigh. I really love them. This is my first set, A-M. They are SO tiny. And so fluffy and soft and just truly precious. Had seen people hate on them. But I actually love them to pieces. Sure, a little weird, but cute. I cannot wait to get my second set, N-Z. <3 Then I will have them all. Precious :D

RED STAR REBELS BY AMIE KAUFMAN

Goodreads Description:

8 HOURS TO STOP AN EXPLOSION... 8 HOURS TO FALL IN LOVE.

From the NYT bestselling co-author of Illuminae and Aurora Rising comes a high-stakes, high-chemistry sci-fi romp about a stowaway girl and the richest boy in the galaxy, racing the clock to outwit a gang of mercenaries.

It’s 2067, and the Graves family has transformed Mars from lifeless rock into a chaotic patchwork of settlements—and everybody wants a piece.

Enter Hunter Graves: handsome, ambitious, and with spectacularly bad timing. He shows up at the United Nations base just as an emergency evacuation sends everyone scurrying for safety. Except he’s left behind. Uh oh.

Also stranded: Cleo, a sharp-tongued stowaway with no intention of dying today, and even less patience for overconfident trust fund boys. But the enemy of your enemy might just help you survive, so here we are.

Turns out the evacuation was just a cover for the mercenaries who came next, and they plan to blow up the base—and every trace of their crime—in eight hours.

Now, Hunter and Cleo have one shot to stop the explosion, escape alive, and deal with the inconvenient fact that they’re falling for each other.

The clock is ticking.

Waiting on Wednesday #725

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

CONFESSIONS FROM THE GROUP CHAT
BY JODI MEADOWS

Goodreads Description:

What happens in the group chat stays in the group chat… until it doesn’t.

Virginia Vaughn just wants to fit in with her super-popular friend group. That means she doesn’t let them know how much she loves the library, she never speaks a word about her massive crush on tragically unpopular Grayson, and she says nasty things she doesn’t actually mean. But only in the group chat, so it’s harmless, right?

But when she has a blowout fight with her clique—specifically, with the Queen Bee herself—her mean texts are posted online for the entire school to see! And, suddenly, Virginia has no one but her cat to talk to.

Cue "Knight Errant," a mystery boy at school who texts Virginia by accident—and who quickly becomes her closest confidante. Though they send messages back and forth for hours every night, Virginia doesn’t want him to know which classmate she is (because then he’ll connect her to the mean texts ALL OVER THE INTERNET). She likes him, but she really likes Grayson, too. Can she find the strength to tell Knight who she really is? And will Grayson—who has become her only ally at school—give up on her when the awful things she’s said about him are finally posted?

Confessions from the Group Chat is the second middle-grade romcom from New York Times bestselling author Jodi Meadow (Bye Forever, I Guess; My Lady Jane, now streaming on Prime). Sweet, funny, and authentically messy, this is an ultra-cute story about middle-school misbehavior, innocent first love, and the inner life of a repentant mean girl.

A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection

Format: 272 pages, Hardcover
Expected Publication: October 21, 2025 by Holiday House
Pre-Order: Blackwells and Amazon US and Amazon UK

Ohh. This book sounds all kinds of messy and heartbreaking and complicated, haha. And yet I am still buying it. Because I have been a fan of Jodi for years. Though I have not read her first middle grade book just yet, I'm going to read it one day. And of course I have to buy this one too. It sounds cute as well :)
What are you waiting for on this sweet Wednesday?

But ahhh. Nervous. Yet so excited :D Finally getting my angel. <3 We have had warmer weather all week. And all next week too. It's weird. But I'm loving it so. No reading, but planning on starting a middle grade book in the next few days, hopefully. Watched some new to me shark movies. Two were shit. But one, Dangerous Animals, was amazing.
