Review: This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales

When I downloaded this book from NetGalley months ago I did not think it would be amazing. I peeked at the ending like I always do, and I wasn't in a rush to read it. And then today I felt the need to do so, since it's out in just a short while. And my god. I loved it. I enjoyed it so much. I'm so happy that I read it.

The writing in This Song Will Save Your Life is very good. I didn't dislike it at all. Not even once. It sort of feels like the main character, Elise, was writing a diary of her life. And I loved that. It's told from her point of view all the time, and I loved reading about her. It is so good as is all the characters.

Since the story is told from Elise we learn a lot about her. First we learn what happened to her almost a year ago, when she was fifteen. We learn that she tried to kill herself. And oh, it was so sad, yet not that sad because it wasn't written in such a sad way. But it was heartbreaking. Because we get to read all about it and we get to know why. We get to know all about Elise's life and it is heartbreaking. Yet I loved reading about it so much.

Though, she does have an amazing family. Most of the time. I loved reading about her life. Though I hated how alone she was. She had no friends. No social life. Because Elise was different. And I loved her so much. Sigh. Though she tried to change, tried to make friends, but they all just seemed to hate her. And it connected with me so much. Because that was me. Well, it still is me. I ended up quitting school because of bullying. And I ended up with no friends, though I used to have a few. So I know it all.

This was a sad book at first. It was sad to read about Elise. But I also loved it, because it was real. I don't often read none-fantasy books, but this one was amazing. I think you should all read it. But oh. I don't know how to talk about it. I don't know what to say. I don't want to give away the whole book. So I will just mention a bit of the plot and some of the characters. Most of the book is about DJing. And I loved it. It's different and amazing. I don't know anything about it, but I loved learning it in this book.

We get to see so much in this book. About Elise. About her family. Some of it broke my heart a lot. But there are also a few happy scenes. Some amazing characters. There is hope. That things can change, that things can get better. But yeah. There is a lot of heartbreak in the beginning. And I got it all so much. It was perfect. But I really hated Elise's school. Her classmates. Though I loved the people she ended up sitting next to at lunch. They were real and nice and all kinds of awesome. Hated Emily.

There are too many characters to talk about. But I adored Vicky. She was such an amazing friend and so kind and sweet and I loved her band. I'm unsure about Pippa. She was a bit stupid. But she was also kind, so I did sort of adore her. Then there is Char. The romance in this book. He was.. well, I guess I could have loved him. He was interesting and charming. But he was an asshole at times. He did some bad things that I did not approve of. But I did like their romance. It was kind of sweet, in a way.

There were other characters that I liked as well. I liked reading about Harry. He was sweet. And oh. I just loved the plot in this book so much and I can't describe it because I don't really understand it. I just loved it all. The writing was so good. And everything was perfect. You all need to read This Song Will Save Your Life when it comes out later this month. It is worth it. It is also worth all the pain in the beginning. I just want a sequel now, because I think there could be one :) There should be, at least. <3

I'm giving this book a five star. At times I thought it was a four point five, but for the most part this book was a five star for me. This Song Will Save Your Life was just amazing. The writing was so good. The characters amazing. I liked the ending as well. I will most definitely get my own copy of this book. Thank you so much to the publisher, Macmillan Kids, and NetGalley for the chance to read it early. <3

  6. I probably would have completely overlooked this title if it hadn't been for all the great reviews. The premise doesn't really appeal to me, and I'm not always keen on heavy contemporary books either, but I'm pretty excited about giving this a go now after all the 5 star reviews. I'm glad it worked for you Carina! :)
