Mini Review: City Cat by Kate Banks

City Cat isn't out in hardcover until November, but I was lucky enough to get to read an ARC of it :) It's a cute and fun read. The rhyming is good, not perfect, but I enjoyed it. And the pictures are pretty cute as well. We get to learn a bit about Europe, which I enjoyed. At the end there is a little bit info about each city :)

This book is about a stray cat that sort of hitchhikes with this family leaving on a European car vacation. We get to see some awesome pictures of this cute cat and his or her adventures through some different cities. We also see a bit about the family. It's a cute story. Nothing too much, a bit simple, and I loved it.

There isn't much more for me to say about this book. Just that it's cute and I think a lot of kids and adults will enjoy it :) Giving it a four star because I felt like the illustrations could have been a bit better, but I still loved them. Also felt like the writing could be improved, since there was a lot of City Cat in the same small paragraph. Hurt my head a bit. But it was a good book, and I'm glad I read it :)
Thank you so much to Ksenia at Macmillan Kids for the review copy of this awesome picture book :)

In My Mailbox #87

Well. I thought for sure that I was back to reading, since I read two books last week. But I was not. Sigh. But I will try to start a book tonight or tomorrow morning. I hope. Because I wish to read. Hope I'll be able to read soon :) Not all lazy, though, cause I don't feel like I have time to do anything before the day is over, either. Oh, well. ANYWAY. Red Death Saga Blog Tour: Guest Post with Bethany Griffin

I'm so happy to be a part of the Red Death Saga blog tour today! I read The Masque of the Red Death last year and I quite enjoyed it. Cannot wait to read The Dance of the Red Death and see how it all ends :) I also really adore Bethany. She's pretty amazing. Today I'm having a guest post with her, where she's sharing her thoughts on writing a duology :) Thank you so much Bethany :) I love it! Thank you to Nina and the UK publisher for letting me be a part of this blog tour. Hope you all enjoyed this guest post :)

So- full disclosure- I’ve read a lot of trilogies, but I’ve never written one. I have written a stand alone novel, and of course, now I’ve completed a two books series, sometimes called a duology, a set, a couple of books? Right now trilogies are very popular, but they are far from a new thing, and usually they work.

Why do trilogies work? I think they generally follow the three act structure with the first book (while hopefully being a stand alone story) serving as the introduction, the second book encompassing the rising action and character arc, and the third book serving as the climax.

But the Red Death Saga didn’t fall into the trilogy mold. I meant to write one book, realized that I wasn’t going to be able to finish it in one volume and expanded into a two book series.

One of the challenges with two books is that book 2 in many ways has to do the jobs that books 2 and 3 would do in a traditional trilogy. Another difficulty inherent in the Red Death Saga is that book 1 ended on something of a cliff-hanger, so if you really think about it, rather than a book and a sequel, the two books are really just two halves of the same story rather than two stories featuring the same characters. If I ever write a two book series again, I won’t do it that way. 1. Because I don’t like to do things the same way twice and 2. Because I realized I love writing story openings; I’ve discovered that those are the most fun to write.

If I were to write two books again, each book would have an opening, a middle, and a climax.  Dance began at the point that would be the beginning of the book and it just kept building from there. It was fun, but didn’t have that new feeling of writing a new book that I always crave when I’m halfway through any manuscript.

Mini Review: Elecopter by Michael Slack

Elecopter is a short and really cute picture book. When I saw that Macmillan had ARC copies of it I just had to request it. And I'm glad I did. It isn't out until September, but you should really buy it then. Because it is a really cute book with amazing illustrations :)

While this is a really short book with not much text to read I still managed to love it. Mostly because I kind of love picture books and middle grade books. There are some amazing illustrations in this book. Of Elecopter and a whole other bunch of pretty animals.

There is also a small plot in this picture book, featuring Elecopter. She's a blue Elephant mixed with a helicopter. Which I found to be really sweet, to be honest. She's just so cute; and a real hero :)

The book tells a short story about Elecopter and the things she does for the savannah. The animals she rescues from hurt and the things she does to keep them all safe. I just enjoyed looking at the pictures of it all and reading the little text :) It was a great picture book. It isn't very long, though, so I'm not sure what else I can say about it. Wish it was longer, but it was also really perfect the way it was.

I think a lot of kids will love this book. I loved it, even though I'm not a kid anymore :) So I think adults will love it too. At least they should, because it's cute and lovely. The pictures are really stunning, and I think I need to check out more of the artwork by Michael. I really enjoyed reading this short book.
Thank you so much to Ksenia at Macmillan Kids for the review copy of this amazing picture book :)

Maybe. I'm not sure. It's just so gorgeous. Sigh. I simply cannot wait to own it. What do you think of it?

Vane Weston is haunted. By the searing pull of his bond to Audra. By the lies he's told to cover for her disappearance. By the treacherous winds that slip into his mind, trying to trap him in his worst nightmares. And as his enemies grow stronger, Vane doesn’t know how much longer he can last on his own.

Cover Reveal: Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi

Today I'm sharing the cover for Into the Still Blue with you all. And omg. It's amazing. And stunning. And just so perfect. Sigh. I'm dying to read this book. I loved Under the Never Sky and Through the Ever Night SO MUCH. I just need more of Perry and Aria. <3 Dying to read this third and final book. I'm first sharing the US cover reveal, and then beneath that the UK cover reveal. I love them both so much, and I will be getting both to complete my collections of US and UK editions ;p Hih. So pretty. And omg. I love the tagline! Gah. I just need so much more of Perry and Aria together. Best part of the cover reveal? FIRST THREE CHAPTERS to be read HERE. Love love love. What do you think of the covers? <3

Meanwhile, time is running out to rescue Cinder, who was abducted by Hess and Sable for his unique abilities. And when Roar returns to camp, he is so furious with Perry that he won’t even look at him, and Perry begins to feel like they have already lost.

Out of options, Perry and Aria assemble a team to mount an impossible rescue mission—because Cinder isn’t just the key to unlocking the Still Blue and their only hope for survival, he’s also their friend. And in a dying world, the bonds between people are what matter most.

In this final book in her stunning Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi raises the stakes to their absolute limit and brings her epic love story to an unforgettable close.

Review: Born of Illusion by Teri Brown

I had been meaning to read Born of Illusion for a few weeks now. I first heard of it because Cat Winters told me to read it and so I knew I would love it. And then I got a finished paperback for review from HarperCollins International, which made me so happy. Today I finally started this book, and I just had to finish it right away. Born of Illusion was amazing.

I don't really know how to describe this book. I don't want to talk too much about it or give too much away. But oh. I loved it so much. First I loved the writing, which was a huge plus. I love it when I love the writing in a book. Sigh. I also really adore the cover. And then I loved the main character. Anna is amazing. And the rest of the characters too. They are so awesome.

The book is told from the point of view of Anna. Who is an amazing girl. I adored her so much. Okay, I might have been a bit sad about how much she loved her mother, whom I didn't like very much at all. I sort of understood her by the ending. Maybe. But I still didn't like her. But even so. Anna is a good person. Born of Illusion is a book about magic. Magic shows, sƩances, real and fraud. It was all really interesting to read about. There is Houdini too. The books is set in 1920, which I loved. Love that time frame.

There is a lot of things happening in this book. And I don't feel like giving it all away. But you should know that there is a lot of magic, yet I might have wanted even more. There are some betrayals. A bit of heartbreak. But also some happy moments that I loved so much. Swoon. The writing is just so good. I just could not stop reading and loving this. I'm at a loss for words. Probably won't be a long review. But that's okay. I just need to share how much I love it. And how much I loved the characters :D

As I said, I loved reading about Anna. Not her mother. Though she was interesting. I loved their manager a bit, though. Mostly near the end. But he was pretty awesome. And oh. Anna's neighbor was awesome. This old man and I loved him so much. Wish we had seen more of him. Anyway. Loved reading about Anna's magic. The things she could do. Not saying more than that. Because I loved reading about the plot in this book and I think all of you will too. There are lots of surprises.

One character that I really loved was Cole. He was just perfect. Sigh. He seemed a bit weird a few times yet to me it was a bit adorable. He is the love interest, for the most part. Anna really likes him. And I so understood that. He's an amazing character and I loved getting to know him. Wish we had gotten to know him a bit more, though. And that there had been a bit more romance, but there didn't need to be, because the plot was awesome all on its own. But yeah. Cole was amazing. Just, so much swoon.

One thing that bothered me was the kind of love triangle. There is this other guy, Owen. And he likes Anna too. They even go on a few dates. But yeah. I did not think that Anna liked him, and I loved that. Sigh. But still. Wish it hadn't been a part of the book, because it messed with my heart a bit. I do not like love triangles. But still. This wasn't all that bad. Nothing too dramatic, hih. Owen was an interesting character. Not sure how I felt about him. Just know that I didn't like him much from the beginning.

I suppose that is all I have to say about this book. I can't think of anything else, and I don't want to spoil what happens. Just, it was amazing. Born of Illusion is a perfect book. Full of mystery and magic and excitement and romance. It just had all of it. I loved mostly all of the characters. They were all interesting to read about, and I loved that. This was just a really good book, and I'm so glad that I read it. Will definitely be re-reading it someday. Just wish there was a sequel with more Anna and Cole.

I read a finished paperback edition of this book, thanks to HarperCollins International. <3 Thank you so much. But I will also be buying a hardcover copy of this book sometime soon. It was just so good that I need a hardcover of it as well, hih. You really should read Born of Illusion. It truly is amazing.

Review: Tumble & Fall by Alexandra Coutts

Tumble & Fall is an intriguing book. And it pains me to say that I did not enjoy it at all. I've wanted to read it ever since I saw that beautiful cover, which really is amazing. Thought it sounded like an amazing book with a great plot. The cover made it look like an epic love story, which was what I was expecting. But I did not get that. At all. And that made me so sad. I'm sorry if this review will sound a bit negative, but I just need to share my feelings about this book :) And be honest too.

I wanted to love this book. I really did. I just could not. It wasn't anything like I thought it would be, and while that didn't really matter, what it ended up being just wasn't good enough for me. First I'll talk about the writing. I did not like it. It's good enough, but I found so many things that annoyed me and I couldn't overlook it. And the way the characters talked. Sigh. Did not like that either. Or the way they were thinking.

This book is told from three different point of views. Read that someone found that a bit hard to understand, but I didn't have any problem with that. I just had problems with the characters. And the way they acted and spoke and just everything. At first I didn't, but then I got into the book and I started to get to know the characters and I just didn't like them. It tells the story of three different teens. Thought they would be friends or something, but they aren't. Thing is, it's told in just 7 days. That was the biggest thing that I disliked.

Just a warning. A bit of my review will be spoilery. I won't spoil the ending. Or some other important things. But yeah. I have to talk about things that happen in this book, and it will be spoilery. If you are planning on reading it, you might not want to know these things already. But then, I kind of wished I had known. Not sure I would have read it if I had known. Sigh. But I am glad I did read it, somewhat, even though I didn't enjoy it. It was interesting to read, and I kind of liked it a tiny bit. Maybe. Perhaps not.

I didn't think I had any feelings about insta-love. I thought I liked it, even. But in this book it's worse than insta-love. There is even insta-sex between someone. Which I didn't understand at all. It didn't make sense. And it just made my head hurt. Sigh. Problem might be that I didn't feel anything for these characters. Nothing at all. They didn't make me feel for them, and there weren't really enough drama or action for me to enjoy this. Summary mentions end of the world. True. But not shocking enough.

Going to talk about some of the characters. There is Sienna, who I kind of liked at first. Except that we didn't truly get to know her at all. She had a past I could have loved, if it had been done better. I just found her to be boring and her family drama too. She suddenly falls in love with Owen. Which I did not get at all. There was no romance there, to be honest. Nothing that I felt at least. That depressed me, since it was the only couple who could have had some romance in this book. A bit sad about it.

Then there is Zan, who I didn't like at all. Her boyfriend died ten months ago, and she's kind of crazy about it. I didn't like it. Didn't feel like we got to know her either. Didn't enjoy reading about her family either, because it was kind of depressing, in a bad way. I thought there would be romance between her and Nick, but there wasn't. Or it was. A bit. And it sucked. She was too obsessed with her dead boyfriend. They have an adventure. It was boring. Sigh. I tried to enjoy it and I failed. I'm sorry.

Then the third main character is Caden. Whom I almost hated. At first I felt sorry for him, but then he changed and I didn't enjoy reading about him at all. We has this weird life that we get to know some things about, and I didn't understand how his mother changed so much in 4 days. Not realistic. You see, he gets kidnapped. By his dad. And my god. It was so fucked up and I didn't like it at all. It was just weird and Caden was even weirder for not trying to "escape." I disliked Sophie a whole lot. Gah.

There is just a lot of weird in this book. And I'm sorry for being a bit negative, but I'm being honest about my feelings for this book and I do not feel like lying about it. I did not like it. I didn't enjoy reading about the characters. I found the things they did to be either boring or stupid. The whole end of the world thing wasn't done very well either. Felt like it could have been so much more. The way the people reacted didn't seem real to me either. Might just be me, though. But still. My feelings about it.

I don't have anything else to say about Tumble & Fall. It could have been an amazing book, like its amazing cover. But it wasn't. Not at all. Not for me, at least. I gave the book many chances to make me love it, but it just failed every time. I'm just happy that I actually managed to finish it, because I wanted to give it up so many times. Still. I sort of liked it a few times, which is why it's a two star and not a one star. It had too many bad parts for me to enjoy it. Hopefully others will like it more than me :)

When I first started this book yesterday I thought I would end up giving it a four star. Because even in the beginning I had some issues with the writing and connecting with the characters. And then later I changed my mind to a three star. And then just a short few pages after that I settled on a two star rating. I could say a two point five, but it wouldn't be true. I did not enjoy this book. Despite reading the whole thing. That doesn't mean that you won't, though, so you should give it a try in September :)

I want to thank Macmillan Kids and Ksenia for the review copy of Tumble & Fall. <3 Despite not loving it, I am happy that I read it, and so happy to own such a pretty copy. Thank you so much for the chance.

Waiting on Wednesday #88

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

THE REAL BOY BY ANNE URSU

Goodreads Description:

From Anne Ursu, the author of one of the most widely acclaimed middle-grade novels in recent memory, comes a new fairy-tale adventure of magic and friendship.

On an island at the edge of an immense sea there is a city, a forest, and a boy. The city is called Asteri, a perfect city that was saved by the magic woven into its walls from a devastating plague that swept through the world over a hundred years before. The forest is called the Barrow, a vast wood of ancient trees that encircles the city and feeds the earth with magic. And the boy is called Oscar, a shop boy for the most powerful magician in the Barrow. Oscar spends his days in a small room in the dark cellar of his master's shop grinding herbs and dreaming of the wizards who once lived on the island generations ago. Oscar's world is small, but he likes it that way. The real world is vast, strange, and unpredictable. And Oscar does not quite fit in.

But it's been a long time since anyone who could call himself a wizard walked the world, and now that world is changing. Children in the city are falling ill and something sinister lurks in the forest. Oscar has been content to stay in his small room in the cellar, comforted in the knowledge that the magic that flows from the trees will keep his island safe. Now, even magic may not be enough to save it...

Cover Reveal: Avalon by Mindee Arnett

Today I'm sharing the cover for Avalon by Mindee Arnett. I cannot wait to read this book! I read and loved her other book, The Nightmare Affair. This one sounds different. And the cover is different too. And I love it so much. I think I will love Avalon a lot. It just sounds kind of perfect, to be honest :) Cannot wait to read it. <3 Also, Mindee is just so amazing :) Avalon is coming out on January 21st 2014. Wish it was out right now, but I believe it's worth the long wait :D What do you think of the cover?

Jeth Seagrave is the leader of the Malleus Shades, the galaxy’s most accomplished and elusive band of teenage mercenaries. Working for feared crime boss Hammer Defoe, Jeth and his crew have made their name stealing unsecured metadrives – the complex piece of technology that makes faster-than-light-speed travel possible. The ITA–the far-reaching organization that produces and polices metatechnology–has been on Jeth’s tale for years, and is looking for any chance to take down Hammer’s black market metatech trade.

But Jeth doesn’t care about any of this. All he wants to do is earn enough money to purchase his parents’ ship, Avalon, from Hammer. His parents, former ITA scientists, were executed for treason years back, and Jeth, his sister Lizzie, and their uncle Milton fell into debt to Hammer. Finally, Jeth has found himself just one job away from freedom. This job, however, is going to give Jeth much, much more than he bargained for – and when he finds himself in possession of information that both Hammer and the ITA will kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he’ll go to get the freedom he’s dreamed of for so long.

But I'm hoping it will look even prettier in person. <3 Anyway. I think the cover is pretty amazing, even so :) And I just adore Lauren so much and I need to read this book right away. I need to get to know Judas ;p Hih. And Morgan. What do you think of the cover?

On Internment, the floating island in the clouds where 16-year-old Morgan Stockhour lives, getting too close to the edge can lead to madness. Even though Morgan's older brother, Lex, was a Jumper, Morgan vows never to end up like him. She tries her best not to mind that her life is orderly and boring, and if she ever wonders about the ground, and why it is forbidden, she takes solace in best friend Pen and her betrothed, Basil.

Then a murder, the first in a generation, rocks the city. With whispers swirling and fear on the wind, Morgan can no longer stop herself from investigating, especially when she meets Judas. He is the boy being blamed for the murder — betrothed to the victim — but Morgan is convinced of his innocence. Secrets lay at the heart of Internment, but nothing can prepare Morgan for what she will find — or who she will lose.

Cover Reveal: Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd

This is actually sort of a cover and title reveal. Since we just learned the title a few days ago and the cover today :D Her Dark Curiosity is the sequel to The Madman's Daughter. Which was just so amazing and creepy and perfect. And oh. I'm just so in love with this title. It's amazing and really fitting, I hope :) And then there is the cover. It looks awesome! Don't think it is quite as perfect as the first one, since I'm really, really in love with that one. But omg. This is so pretty too. And London in the background! Oh. I'm just dying to read it. Truly dying. Wish it was out before January 2014 :) Just can't wait. <3

To defeat the darkness, she must first embrace it.

Months have passed since Juliet Moreau returned to civilization after escaping her father's island—and the secrets she left behind. Now, back in London once more, she is rebuilding the life she once knew and trying to forget Dr. Moreau’s horrific legacy—though someone, or something, hasn’t forgotten her.

As people close to Juliet fall victim one by one to a murderer who leaves a macabre calling card of three clawlike slashes, Juliet fears one of her father’s creations may have also escaped the island. She is determined to find the killer before Scotland Yard does, though it means awakening sides of herself she had thought long banished, and facing loves from her past she never expected to see again.

As Juliet strives to stop a killer while searching for a serum to cure her own worsening illness, she finds herself once more in the midst of a world of scandal and danger. Her heart torn in two, past bubbling to the surface, life threatened by an obsessive killer—Juliet will be lucky to escape alive.

With inspiration from Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this is a tantalizing mystery about the hidden natures of those we love and how far we’ll go to save them from themselves.

Mini Review: The Too-Clever Fox by Leigh Bardugo

Been waiting for ages to read this short story. And I can finally say that it did not disappoint. It's fast read, and I could not stop reading it. It's written really well, like everything else by Leigh. I don't know how to describe this short story. I kind of wish it had been even darker. Because I'm like that. Yet it is dark enough. And a bit funny and sweet. It's just amazing.

The Too-Clever Fox is told from the point of view of a fox named Koja. And oh. I really loved reading about him. It isn't such a long story, yet we do get to know enough. We get to know about Koja's life, from he was born and until now. It was pretty interesting to read about. Not saying more than that :)

We get to know a lot of things in this short story. Mostly just about the animals living in this forest in the world of Ravka. Which I loved. Because there are a lot of amazing creatures there. Like Ivan Gostov the bear. And Lula the nightingale. They were both awesome to read about. Sigh. Everything was amazing to read about. And while I loved every part of this story, I still wished it had been longer. Even though it is told from the point of view of a fox. But that just made me love it more and made me want even more. But I also felt like I got to know enough :)

Won't say much about the plot in this book. Just that there is a hunter. And that it's kind of creepy. And that I loved it and wished it had been even more creepy. We get to read a bit about this guy called Jurek and his sister Sofiya. They were a bit scary. But really interesting to read about, so I loved that a lot. Not much more to say about this short story. Just that I loved it so much. It's amazing. I loved the ending too. Although it was a bit shocking and a lot of heartbreaking. Sigh. It was just so good.

You should all know by now that I adore and love Leigh Bardugo. And everything she has written. And all the editions of her books. And all the jewelry based on her books. If you are curious about my collection, you should just search for Leigh Bardugo at the top my blog where there is a blogger search box, cause it searches all of my blog. Anyway. I'm dying to read the third book, Ruin and Rising :D And hoping for many more short stories by Leigh. <3 I just cannot wait to read it all. Sigh. Now, go read this :D

ANTIGODDESS BY KENDARE BLAKE

Goodreads Description:

Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.
