Review: The Diviners by Libba Bray

This is a long book. I read it on my iPad, and it might have taken me a little while, but all those pages were perfect. I really loved this book. Unsure how to rate it, though. I'm thinking a five star. Cause I really did love it. But I also had a few issues in the beginning, but they didn't last for long. And mostly I loved all of this book. Even the kind of bittersweet ending. I even enjoyed the creepy murders. And there were a lot of those. So many people being killed. But also so interesting.

I think this book was based in 1925. A bit confused, cause it was never mentioned, but adding up the numbers from some things happening in this book says 1925 :) I do like the time this book is set in. But historical books also confuse me a little bit at times. This one didn't, though. Not very much, at least. In the beginning I was a tiny bit confused by the writing and the way people were speaking. Didn't take me long to get used to it, though. And I ended up loving it all, the time, the speaking.

Going to talk a bit about the plot, then the characters. Most of them. The story in The Diviners is perfect. I really loved it all. Even though it creeped me the fuck out all the time. I loved it. I like scary books. Even though it scares me so much at times. Yet, I cannot help but love it so much. Just like scary movies. This book is about a murderer. A big one. And a religion one. I don't like reading about religion; because I don't believe in any of it. So those parts bothered me a bit. There weren't that much of the religion, though. So happy about that :)

The murderer in this book is a real creep. My god, how I hated him. We never read from his point of view, but we got the point of view from many of the people he killed. Their final moments. Although, never the point where he killed them. So it wasn't that bad. But yeah, it was still pretty awful. And kind of awesome as well. The main characters in this book does not know who the killer is at first, they are just searching for him. But we know. From the beginning. Will share some of it ;p

The murderer is Naughty John. At first I thought it was something perverse and disgusting. But it was just murders; thankfully. (Not that that isn't awful enough.) He has this song.. Which I will share. It is awful. But also kind of amazing. So creepy to read about it; cause he sings and hums it often.
"Naughty John, Naughty John, does his work with his apron on. Cuts your throat and takes your bones. Sells 'em off for a coupla stones...." Yeah. It was pretty creepy. But kind of catching o.O

Won't say more of John. There is a lot to him. Lots of him in this book. And I loved that plot twist. Was pretty awesome ;) Anyway. The title of this book: The Diviners. It means some special people. There is a lot of special people in this book. People with special powers. Like main character Evie. She can hold any object and is then able to tell your secrets. It was pretty awesome. But also gave her a wicked headache. There is lots of power in this book. Healing. The Sight. So much amazing.

A bit disappointed that we didn't get to see more of these powers. But this book ends so good and awful that there MUST be so much more about it in the next book. There must be. Anyway. The plot in this book is perfect. The Diviners is a thriller. In my eyes. It is full of mystery. Suspense. This book has it all. It does not have romance. Not really. Just a little bit at the end. But that was sweet. And there must be more in book two. Just, no love triangle. Pretty please? It's all I ask of you. All I want.

Won't share more of the plot. Just know it is perfect, and so much is happening. All the time. It's perfect. This book might be all kinds of long, but I felt like everything needed to be there. Like Uncle Will's museum. Museum of the Creepy Crawlies. A nickname, that it. We spent some time in this museum, and while it might be a bit boring, I found it pretty interesting. Plus, Uncle Will is kind of awesome :) Full of secrets, but still kind and sweet. Wish to know more about him in book two.

Time to start mentioning the characters. Just talked about Will. Then there is the main character; Evie. Will is her Uncle. There is a lot about Evie. At first I disliked her a lot. She kissed so many boys.. might be weird of me, but I disapproved of that :p It happened before this book started, though, so I'm not mad about it. Much. She is a pretty cool girl. Rebellious. But I liked that about her. She's from a small town; and then she gets shipped off to her Uncle Will in New York. Which she loves.

She has a best friend there. Mabel. And I'm unsure about Mabel. I did like her. She's kind and a good friend. But she was a bit boring. She annoyed me a few times. But I also really liked her. She has this thing for Jericho. The young man living with Will. He doesn't care for her, though. And I approved of that. Hih. Cause I want Jericho and Evie to be together. They fit together so well. But Evie worries about Mabel.. but I liked the last page from her pov, seems to be a new guy; hopefully, for Mabel :)

You see, Jericho is an amazing boy. He's pretty huge. And blond. But he's kind and sweet. And he's broken. Very broken. Loved getting to know of his past. I loved him. Period. He's an amazing character. And I just wanted more from him. Disappointed that there weren't flirting between Jericho and Evie. Wanted that so much. Maybe in the sequel. <3 I hope. Then there was Sam. Ugh. He likes Evie. Flirts with her all the time. But I don't think she is interested at all. Not like that. Thank god.

He's a weird character. He, like Evie, has a power. Won't say what it is, cause I don't want to give everything away :) But it is an awesome power. I just didn't like the dude :p Well, okay, I liked him. Just hated that he might become a goddamn love triangle in the sequel. Don't you dare to let that happen, Libba! *Hopes* <3 He is a bit mysterious, and he's all alone. So I couldn't really hate him. I'm also really curious to know all about his mother; and what will happen in the sequel. Excited :)

Then there is Memphis. I kind of adored him. He's living with his younger brother and their aunt. Hated her. But I loved his brother. They both have powers. And my god. I worry for his brother. Some things broke my heart. And I worry for Memphis too. He has a pretty big part in this book; lots of pov's from him. He meets this girl; Theta. She's friends with Evie and live in the same apartment building as her and Mabel. She lives with Henry; her gay best friend. Memphis and her start a relationship; and I loved that so much. They were sweet together and there must be more of that.

Theta and Henry. They are amazing characters. Both with amazing powers. Sigh. We so need to read more about those powers. I loved them all. A bit different and unique, and so perfect. At first I thought of Theta as a bimbo. But she isn't. She's an excellent dancer, and she's really kind and sweet. She has the most awful past. Almost made me cry. It is so goddamn awful. And I loved her all the more because of it. It gives her a lot of character. Might be the most interesting person in this book :) Maybe.

My god, I have talked forever in this review of mine! lol. But I did need to mention it all. Really, I did (A) Just like writing about it all once I have started. Anyway. There was this one character I disliked. Blind Bill. He was goddamn awful near the end. And I'm worried about what will happen about him in book two.. also worried about this new villain at the end. Makes me nervous. But also excited. Sigh. The Diviners was a perfect book. Loved everything in it. Mostly :D

Just wished there had been more romance. But I did love the last few pages. Even though it kind of felt like Evie was taking advantage.. still, I'm super excited for book two. Hoping it will be out very soon :) Because I'm not sure I can go forever waiting to see what happens next. I'm impatient. Decided on a four point five / five star. If you like a good thriller book with lots of amazing characters; then you really should read this book. I'm pretty sure you would love it :)

~

I wanted to share this quote with you all. It is perfect. I love it. A good teaser, I think ;) It isn't until 85% in, though :p But still. It is an really amazing quote. And ahh. I love it so much :)

Evie bent her arm, propped her head up with one hand. Jericho sat up and draped the sheet around him, but not before Evie sneaked a furtive glance at his chest - the soft golden hair, the beautiful muscle, the long older scar alongside the newer one made by Uncle Will. She wanted to touch him, to place a kiss at the center of his chest.

Ashen Winter Blog Tour: Interview with Mike Mullin

I'm so happy to be a part of this tour! Been about a year since I read the first book; Ashfall. And I loved it. Then I was lucky enough to get to read Ashen Winter this April via NetGalley, and I loved it even more, I think! Cannot wait for it to be out. Because I'm pretty sure you'll all love it. My review for Ashen Winter can be found here. My part of this blog tour is an interview I had with the author Mike Mullin. And I love it! Hope you do too :) Thank you so much, Mike!

Question 1:
What is your favorite books to read? Like, do you enjoy reading Young Adult (like you write,) or do you enjoy adult books more? (Personally I prefer YA books. So far. :))

Me, too! I read more Young Adult books than any other type. Outside of that I read a wide variety of genres. I put everything I read on Goodreads—if you like, you can become my friend on Goodreads here. Last year I read 171 books, and here’s how they break down by genre:

Question 2:
Where did you find your inspiration for Ashfall and Ashen Winter? In other books, on the tv, in newspapers etc.
The idea for Ashfall started with another book—Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything. I found it on a display at Central Library in downtown Indianapolis. Dozens of novel ideas lurk within its pages, but the one that stuck with me was the idea of a supervolcano eruption at Yellowstone. A few weeks after I read it, I woke at 3:30 am with a scene occupying my head so completely I was afraid it would start spilling out my nostrils and ears. I typed 5,500 words, finishing just before dawn. Then I put the project away and let it gestate for eight months. When I returned to it after researching volcanoes and volcanic ash, I realized the inspired scene I wrote in the middle of the night wouldn’t work, and ultimately that whole section had to be scrapped. The only word that remains from that draft? Ashfall.

As I outlined ASHFALL, I realized that I had a lot more story than would fit in one book. Right then I did a rough outline for a trilogy, so I’ve known from the beginning most of what would happen in ASHEN WINTER and book 3. The scene around page 180 of ASHEN WINTER that probably made you scream, for example? That’s been in my head for almost three years now. And now I get to share it with you. Mwahahaha.

Question 3:
Who is your favorite character in Ashfall? (Most fun to write.)

Alex. Internally, he’s modeled on me as a teen. Externally, he’s modeled on Ben Alexander, a teen I met at my taekwondo dojang. He serves as the outlet for a lot of my own beliefs and personality. As a teenager, I was a mess—responsible but impulsive, kind but sometimes violent—and Alex shares that confused jumble of conflicting impulses.
I also really love writing Darla—particularly her sassy moments. She’s a strange amalgam of my wife and brother. I admire her toughness, determination, and practicality—hopefully that comes through as your read about her.

Question 4:
Then who is your least favorite character to write?

I made the mistake of basing many of the characters in ASHFALL and ASHEN WINTER on real people. Uncle Paul, Aunt Caroling, Max, and Anna are my brother’s real-life family, for example. They’re an amazing family—tight knit and loving. But in fiction, you have to have conflict to keep the story interesting. If I wrote realistic conversations based on those in my brother’s family, I’d put my readers to sleep. So I made Aunt Caroline more querulous than she is in real life. I told my sister-in-law what I was doing and asked her permission before I used her name, and I think she understands, but it still makes me a little nervous to write her character now.

Question 5:
Will we see more of you in books? More Ashfall books, or different YA books, or anything adult.

Yes! I’m working on the final book in the ASHFALL trilogy now. After that, I’ll write something different. All the ideas I have right now are exciting YA novels. I’m not ruling out writing something different, but I’d be far more likely to write middle grade than adult books. A great novel needs conflict and change—when do we change more than as teenagers? Or get into more conflict? That’s why YA literature is inherently more interesting than adult literature. Most adults are kind of boring, honestly.

About Ashen Winter.

It's been over six months since the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano. Alex and Darla have been staying with Alex's relatives, trying to cope with the new reality of the primitive world so vividly portrayed in Ashfall, the first book in this trilogy. It's also been six months of waiting for Alex's parents to return from Iowa. Alex and Darla decide they can wait no longer and must retrace their journey into Iowa to find and bring back Alex's parents to the tenuous safety of Illinois. But the landscape they cross is even more perilous than before, with life-and-death battles for food and power between the remaining communities. When the unthinkable happens, Alex must find new reserves of strength and determination to survive.

About Mike.

Mike Mullin’s first job was scraping the gum off the undersides of desks at his high school. From there, things went steadily downhill. He almost got fired by the owner of a bookstore due to his poor taste in earrings. He worked at a place that showed slides of poopy diapers during lunch (it did cut down on the cafeteria budget). The hazing process at the next company included eating live termites raised by the resident entomologist, so that didn’t last long either. For a while Mike juggled bottles at a wine shop, sometimes to disastrous effect. Oh, and then there was the job where swarms of wasps occasionally tried to chase him off ladders. So he’s really glad this writing thing seems to be working out.

Mike holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife and her three cats. Ashen Winter is his second novel.  His debut, Ashfall, was named one of the top five young adult novels of 2011 by National Public Radio, a Best Teen Book of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews, and a New Voices selection by the American Booksellers Association.

Review: Ashen Winter by Mike Mullin

I read the first book in this series; Ashfall many months ago. In August 2011. I thought I would have to re-read it before starting Ashen Winter; but then I realized I remember everything that happened in Ashfall. And that made me really happy. Plus Ashen Winter lets us know many things that has happened in the book. Which I really loved.

I didn't easily get started on this book. In two days I read 30 pages. But I am to blame for that; not the book. Then I decided that I wanted and needed to read it. And I read all the 566 pages in less than 9 hours. And oh. They are awesome pages! I really loved this book. Although some things I sort of hated. But mostly I loved this book. I love the main character; Alex. And I loved the writing.

Ashen Winter starts were Ashfall ended. Sort of. Alex and Darla are still with his Uncle and family; only it has been 6 months. Nothing much happened in those 6 months gone; but we did learn about the important parts :) (Side note; really happy that their hair is back again. Hih.) Alex still hasn't heard anything from his parents. Which is when they happen to come across a gun his father had when he left to find Alex they decide to start searching for them. Well, Alex and Darla do :)

Really enjoyed the beginning of this book; it starts of brutal right away. Not going to spoil it for you; just know that it is sort of awesome :) For the most part. Alex and Darla then begins to travel to look for them. They learn from "someone" where his parents are supposed to be. So they know where they are going. But then a lot of bad things happen. So, so many bad things. But oh, is was awesome to read about.

There is a lot of action and things are happening all the time. The plot in this book is just so good. It's a bit hard to explain, really. But it is really, really good. Although most of it is horrible; lots of death and some torture. But, yeah, it is written well. While they are searching for Alex's parents something really horrible happens. I do not wish to spoil it; but I see no way of writing this review without doing so. Considering it happens before 200 pages into the book. So beware! Big SPOILER ahead. Well, sort of ;)

Alex and Darla gets seperated. I won't say how, but it is bad. But Alex goes searching for her as well. And I really loved that. Although I sort of didn't like the people he found first. Ben and Alyssa. Although I did really like Ben; he was great. Didn't like Alyssa much. Although I felt very, very sorry for her; and I hated what had happened to her. But she almost made it a love triangle; and I hate that :p

Anyway! That's all I will say about the plot :D There is so so many things happening in this book. It would take me forever if I talked about them all. Even though I sort of wish to. There is many of the same characters from Ashfall in this book; and I really liked that :) Many new characters too, though. And I liked most of them. I think. Then there are the Peckerwoods. And omg. I hated them. But I also loved how well written it was; and it made the story so good.

If you have not read Ashfall you really should do so. And if you have read Ashfall; you REALLY need to get Ashen Winter :) Because it is amazing. Such a great sequel. It has awesome writing, amazing characters, some great romance, and lots of action. It is also super long, but I loved that :) The covers for this series it really amazing. I love the cover for Ashfall; but I think I love Ashen Winter more :D The cover make so much sense after reading the book.

With how Ashen Winter ended I really think there should be a third book. But it doesn't have to be. But, yeah, I really, really want a sequel :) I finished reading this book on April 5th 2012.
Thank you to NetGalley and to Tanglewood for the chance to read Ashen Winter early. <3

Review: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

I'm having trouble describing my feelings for this book. I loved The Raven Boys so much. Not more than The Scorpio Races, but pretty close. This book was perfect. Was a bit worried about reading it, because someone had mentioned a love triangle. But there isn't one. I can understand why someone would say there is, but to me, for there to be a triangle there must be kissing involved. There is no kissing in this book at all. But there is a little romance. And it is kind of sweet. Maybe. Still unsure.

The cover of The Raven Boys is a bit unique, and a bit creepy. But I still love it. Love the colors. I am also totally in love with how it looks without the jacket. So pretty in white, but gorgeous writing. And that triangle shaped drawing in the front. Which I love. And makes a lot of sense after reading the book. Somehow. Anyway. I love the cover of this book. And I loved this book. Am a bit worried about there being four books; with probably means one each year. I need to know sooner that that! lol. Still. I'm so glad this wasn't just one book. I need so much more of these characters. They were all perfection.

This is the second book by Maggie that I have read. And I do adore her books. Have read The Scorpio Races three times, and I could read it all the time. That book is beyond perfection. The Raven Boys is pretty close. It is just so amazing. The writing is perfect, the characters are amazing and so full of details. We got to know them all so well. And I'm not sure I'm used to that. And I loved it so much. I could not stop reading this book. It had be captured until the end. So perfect. Just wanted more.

I'm unsure about what to talk about in this review of mine. Will mostly be talking about the characters. And a little about the romance thing. First I'm going to say something about the plot. Not much, because I don't want to spoil things. Not even the things that happen very early on. Because you need to read it all for yourself to truly love it, I think. And you will love it all. The plot is interesting, exciting, scary and mysterious. This book has it all. Well, except for kissing ;p But I'm hoping for that in book two to four.

The story in this book is amazing. It is also unique. And it is perfect. It sort of is about witches and legends. But it is also about normal human beings. But they are pretty amazing all on their own. It is also about high school. The Aglionby private school for boys. Thankfully it doesn't focus at what happens at the school at all. I kind of hate books that takes places inside a school :p There is one school scene, but it happens fast and is also pretty awesome. We hear a bit about it, though, and I liked that.

There is so many things happening in this book. I won't mention them. But if you read the amazing summary, you'll know some pretty important things :) A bit sad that Blue never told Gansey why she really saw his spirit. Sad about that. She needs to tell him, damnit! ;) Hopefully in book two. Blue is the main character in this book. One of them. She is not a seer, but her mom is. And everyone living in her house. But she does make their powers stronger, which I thought was both awesome and boring.

But Blue is an amazing character. Her family is poor, and I kind of liked that. She has short hair. She has kind of weird clothing style, but I also loved it. She is kind of amazing. She's a bit brave, and loving, and protective, in a way. She is an amazing female lead character. I loved her a lot. My favorite character, though, is Gansey. He's a part of "Blue's Raven Boys" as her family puts it. And I love them all. They are four boys. Gansey is kind of the best one, their leader, in a weird way. It's perfect.

Gansey really is a perfect character. On the outside he might seem like a spoiled rich kid who can get whatever he wants. And he is that. But he is so much more. He has the biggest heart. He cares for so many people. And my god, how it hurt me when they hurt him. He doesn't deserve to be hurt. He is so kind and loving and protective. And really smart. He doesn't know how to spend his money, but I loved that about him. He really is the sweetest. We got to know so many interesting things about him.

Like the fact that he is deadly allergic to bees. He was dead, once. Which I won't share more of ;) But gah. I hated reading that story. But also loved it. I do love a broken boy. He wears contacts, and sometimes glasses. Adorable. He's strong and handsome. He's also on this quest to find something. Someone. Someone dead. Or not. Gah. It was so awesome to read about. Because it made Gansey more real and amazing, and it made the mystery in this book perfect. It really needed to be in this book.

Gansey isn't the only amazing character, though. There is also Adam and Ronan and Noah. We didn't see Noah much. But oh. How I loved him. He's so cute. He seemed so young at times, but he was a teenager. Loved him a lot. Also loved Ronan. He might seem like a total asshole. Which he kind of is. But I loved him. There is so many unknown sides of him, and I hope we get to see all of them. Loved his pet bird; Chainsaw. Loved how he was with her. Sigh. I adored there characters. So much details.

Then there was Adam. Sigh. I am not sure how to feel about Adam. The one thing I'm unsure about in this book. I do not love him like I love Gansey, but I also kind of adore him. He is sweet and kind and shy. He's being abused at home. And I hated that. But also loved it. Because it made Adam more awesome. He's kind of the love interest. In a weird way. He and Blue flirts a bit, and he seem to like her a lot. Which I understand. She likes him too, I think. But don't think that Adam is her "true love."

I mean, sure, I liked Adam. And maybe he and Blue would have been sweet together. But Adam changes at the end of this book. And I'm not sure I liked it at all. He's different. Curious to see how that turns out in the next book. The thing is, I see Blue and Gansey together. And they are perfect. There need to be so much romance between them in book two. There must be. I need it. And they do seem to like each other. So, yeah. I need them to be together. Hopefully in book two :) And 3 & 4.

While there is some romance between Adam and Blue, it doesn't seem that serious. Well, at least not to me. There could have been more. But also glad there wasn't. Even though I don't love Adam the most, I kind of enjoyed their flirting a bit. Because I do adore Adam. I just want Gansey. <3 And there are some hints about future Gansey and Blue. Some amazing hints. Won't say more than that. Just that I loved reading those scenes. Sigh. There must be love between them. There must be. I need it.

The close friendships in this book are the best. I loved how Gansey and Adam and Ronan and Noah were together. They were real friends. And I loved every scene with them in it. They all have secrets. We get to learn some of them, some pretty awesome things, but there are so many things I'm still curious about. Sigh. Just hope we'll get much more in book two; and that I don't have to wait until book four or something (A) Hih. I'm pretty impatient when it comes to things I want.

Anyway. I think that is all there is to say about this book. Also, I adored Blue's family. Her mom was pretty awesome. They all were. Don't remember each of the names, but loved them all. The Raven Boys is told from many different point of views. All of them awesome. I preferred Gansey's, though. Hih. He was just so perfect. Sigh. I need to re-read this book pretty soon, I think. I cannot wait for the sequel. Hoping it is out soon; and not a year from now. *Hopes.* Anyway. This book was perfect. And you must read it. I'm pretty sure you would love it like I did :) It is just so good.
